Germany's KfW, India's IREDA sign €200 million agreement

To promote development of renewable energy in India, German Government-owned development bank KfW today signed a loan agreement worth €200 million with the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Limited (IREDA).

The agreement was signed by Debashish Majumdar, CMD, IREDA with Uwe Ohls, Senior Vice President, KfW in the presence of Christian Schlaga, Chargé d'Affaires a.i. of the Federal Republic of Germany, and of Prabodh Saxena, Joint Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs of India's Ministry of Finance.

Subsidized Gas Undercuts India's Renewable Energy Target, Minister Says

Cooking gas subsidized by the government is undercutting India’s efforts to roll out fuel produced from renewable sources such as agricultural waste, a government minister said.

India has installed plants in the last four years that can produce 930,712 cubic meters of gas from manure and other agricultural refuse, according to a written answer to parliament today from Minister of New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah.

That fell short of targets in part because of the increasing availability of subsidized liquid petroleum gas, Abdullah said.

France proposes restructuring of PV FIT including 20% reduction in rates; New rates to go into effect March 9th, 2011

At the end of February 2011 the French government announced a proposed restructuring of the nation's feed-in tariffs (FIT) for solar photovoltaics (PV), including a 20% cut in PV rates and a requirement that all projects over 100kW go through a tender process. Also, France's Sustainable Development Commission has announced that the nation installed 719MW of PV in 2010, a 152% increase over the 285MW installed in 2009.

Panel suggests 15% increase in urban development funding

The government needs to scale up urban development funding by at least 15% per annum in the 12th Plan (2011-17) to meet the challenges of rapid urbanisation in the country, an expert committee has said.

Citing the need for an investment of 32.4 lakh crore over a period of 20 years, the committee has suggested that the government needs to increase spending and revamp existing schemes to enhance urbanisation.

Gamesa to double India capacity with Rs 500-Cr investment

Spain’s Gamesa Corporacion Tecnologica is doubling its wind turbine manufacturing capacity in India at an investment of Rs 500 crore, foreseeing higher demand for renewable energy in the country. The company has also denied being interested in a stake in Suzlon Energy , India’s largest wind-turbine maker. Gamesa , one of the world's largest wind-turbine manufacturers, plans to raise capacity in India to 1,000 mw by September.

Himachal to set up climate study centre

Himachal Pradesh will set up a centre to study the impact of the changing environment on climate, Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal said Wednesday.

The centre will promote research and generate scientific database relating to the sectors that are vulnerable to climate change like agriculture, horticulture and forests, Dhumal said during his budget speech in the assembly.

“Besides carrying out research in the areas of disaster management and glaciers, it will also work towards evolving appropriate strategies towards climate change,” the chief minister added.

EU plan to double energy efficiency by 2020

The European Union needs to double its efforts to boost energy efficiency in order to cut greenhouse gases, partly by producing better household appliances, renovating public buildings and private homes, and driving improved cars, the EU executive said in a plan adopted Tuesday.

The European Commission said the EU can cut greenhouse gases 25 percent below 1990 levels by 2020, surpassing its own 20 percent target, through an efficiency campaign in transportation, construction and agriculture.

A £550 million green business finance fund was announced today that will benefit small to medium-sized companies that want to improve their energy efficiency affordably.

The new Energy Efficiency Financing scheme is the first privately financed scheme of its kind in the UK and is being jointly launched by Siemens and the Carbon Trust. CLP India bets big on wind power and eyes foray into solar power

Private power player CLP India said that it plans to enhance its wind power portfolio by 200 to 300 MW every year over the next three years and is besides mulling an entry into solar power in the next two years.

The official said that CLP India which owns and operates a 655-MW gas power plant near Bharuch in Gujarat, has already obtained approval to expand this by 1,000 MW and is presently awaiting allocation of gas for the project.

HP plans to harness wind energy

The hill state proposes to explore the possibility of generating power using wind energy as an alternate source of power after having harnessed electricity from different hydrological sources.

China Plans Cap-and-Trade Trials to Help Control Greenhouse Gas Emissions

This past week, Premier of China Wen Jiabao announced that China would start actively working to cut its carbon emissions while still continuing its economic development. Jiabao stated that China would specifically reduce the amount of carbon dioxide produced per each unit of economic development by 16 percent to 17 percent by the end of 2015. China is the world's largest carbon dioxide producer, putting it ahead of the United States.

SMC plans e-waste disposal facility in Surat

With increasing usage of computers and various ancillary products, electronic waste is becoming a cause of concern, as there are limited facilities available for its disposal.

Green Lighting shaves Rs 2 cr off lighting bills in Chennai

Chennai Mayor Ma Subramanian today said the Corporation could bring down the electricity bill for lighting up the city by Rs two crore due to Green Lighting.

The bill has decreased from Rs 18 crore to Rs 16 crore owing to green lighting, he said while appreciating the people behind the concept at the Light India International 2011 fair at Chennai Trade Centre today.

Indo-US centre on clean energy soon

Italy moves to quell fears over solar incentives

Italy's government rushed on Friday to quell concerns among banks and investors about the impact of new renewable energy rules on funding for the sector, pledging to reach an agreed solution on new solar incentives.

Italy removed a much-feared cap on production incentives for solar power generation in a new renewable energy decree approved on Thursday but included measures which could slow down solar growth.

India May Auction 296 Megawatts of Solar Capacity, Economic Times Reports

India may issue a tender for 296 megawatts of solar capacity for starting in April, the Economic Times reported, citing Anil Agrawal, Chief Executive Officer of NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd.

The tender will be the second under the country National Solar Mission. NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam, a state-run power trader, is overseeing the auctions.

Green initiative in hospitals can reduce power bill: CII

Hospital in Mumbai consume 14 per cent more energy than the national average among hospitals, states a CII report on energy efficient hospitals that was released on Thursday.

As part of its green audit in city hospitals, the CII conducted a survey of 17 hospitals and found that nearly 60 per cent of them consumed more energy when compared to the minimum energy efficiency index. The study has pegged the minimum energy consumption at 200 k wt/sq mt/ annum and found that 60 per cent of the hospitals consume more energy.

Biofuels only major way to decarbonizes road fuel: BP

Biofuels represent the only way to significantly reduce carbon emissions in road transport fuel and are likely to account for at least 12 percent of supply by 2030, an official with oil giant BP said on Wednesday.

"There is no other alternative that I can really subscribe to in terms of decarbonizing road transport," Olivier Mace, head of strategy, regulatory affairs and communications at BP unit BP Biofuels, told a conference organized by Agra Europe.
