District gets its first solar biometric ATM

The Union bank of India unveiled the region's first solar powered, voice enabled biometric rural ATM at Ghawaddi village in Ludhiana district on Saturday. A product of the collaboration between M/s Vortex and the IIT at Chennai, the ATM works on solar power, has low power consumption and can support biometric and PIN based transactions, according to bank officials.

SAN FRANCISCO TARGETS 100% SOLAR ENERGY BY 2020

The government of San Francisco is strengthening its commitment to renewable energy by installing solar panels on its City Hall roof.

The city government will begin calling for bids from solar panel companies next month for the mounting of photovoltaic cells on the roofs of the San Francisco City Hall and the Davies Symphony Hall, a local music hub.

Solar panel installations will also push on in public buildings in government subdivisions like Chinatown and Potrero Hill.

India to have satellite to monitor green cover

India will launch a ''forestr satellite'' as part of its efforts to monitor the country''s green cover, Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh said today.

"We have to monitor (the Green Cover) on realtime basis. We will be launching our own forestry satellite sometime in the later part of 2012," he said here.

Addressing a brain storming session on Green India Mission (GIM), the Minister said ISRO has already taken a decision in this regard. "We will be having a family of satellites that will be dedicated to monitor the green cover," he said.

India launches National consultation for air pollutants

To meet the challenges of pollution on both local and global scale, India on Thursday launched a national technical consultation for air pollutants on a market-friendly emissions scheme.

Speaking at the inaugural session, environment minister Jairam Ramesh said it is "a very small" but "a necessary step" in environmental regulation to address global climate change.

"There is a debate on carbon trade globally. Today what India is doing with this initiative is a carbon trade for local polluters," Ramesh said.

Tata starts electric car production in Coventry - BBC

Indian manufacturer Tata has started production of electric cars in Coventry.The firm, which owns Jaguar Land Rover, has taken on 23 people to help build 1,500 Vista models.The vehicle has a predicted range of up to 120 miles (200km), and manages 0-60 kmph in under 10 seconds, a spokesman said.

It will cost between £25,000 to £30,000 with a £5,000 reduction on top through a government grant.

Abound Solar Reaches Deal With India's Solarsis

Abound Solar Inc. has reached a long-term sales agreement with Solarsis, a designer and installer of solar power systems in India.

The companies are working together on a 1-megawatt array in Ananthapur in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh, and Solarsis plans to establish a test facility to optimize designs around Abound's modules. Dollar amounts of the deal announced Wednesday weren't disclosed, but Abound Solar CEO Tom Tiller describes it as on the order of about $1 million.

India to have floating solar power plant

India's private energy giant Tata Power has joined with Australia's Sunengy Pty Limited for a $1 million pilot project to build a solar-powered electricity generation plant that will float on water, the companies announced. "In our quest to deliver sustainable energy, Tata Power is consistently investing in clean and eco-friendly technologies," Tata Executive Director Banmali Agrawala said in a statement.

Iberdrola Halts U.S. Wind Farm After Suzlon Turbine Blades Fall to Ground

Iberdrola SA (IBE), the biggest producer of renewable energy, halted power production at a 150-megawatt wind farm in Rugby, North Dakota, after the blades of a Suzlon Energy Ltd. (SUEL) S88 generator fell from their mount.

The plant was suspended after the March 14 accident while Spain’s Iberdrola and Suzlon of India investigate the causes, according to an Iberdrola spokesman who asked not to be named in line with company policy. No one was hurt and there is no indication of when electricity production may resume.

Green investment bank 'must operate commercially'

The government is putting the UK's fledgling green economy at risk by downgrading the "green investment bank" to a mere fund, MPs have warned in a scathing report on the plans.

Western Ghats least hit by global warming

There is some good news for people living in the Western Ghats areas of Karnataka. They will be cocooned from the harsh effects of global warming while the rest of the country witnesses an exponential rise in temperatures, says a report that forecast the effects of global warming in India in the next two decades. 

Annual temperatures in 2030 will rise to 2.2 degree Celsius compared to their 1970s levels of 1.7 degee Celsius, the report warns.

Ramesh says achieving 33 per cent forest cover unrealistic

India's ambitious target of bringing 33 per cent of its land under green cover is not realistic given the population pressure and the pressure for development, Minister for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh today said. 

"This is (the target) unrealistic in a country like India where the population is 1.2 billion and set to become 1.6 billion by 2040. India earmarks INR 1500 crore for solar projects

The Indian government would dole out INR 1500 crore over the next two years to banks and finance companies to lend money to solar energy projects at a generous 5% interest rate.

A top government official said that the money would be lent to small solar projects adding up to 200 MW by companies like SIDBI, NABARD and National Housing Bank. These lenders would be provided interest free loans by the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency an arm of the renewable energy ministry. The agency would also provide funds to state run banks in urban areas at 2% interest rate.

Japanese car factory in bid to harness power of the rising sun

Toyota believes plans to install thousands of solar panels at its Burnaston plant will increase the green credentials of an eco-friendly car it builds at the factory.

The Japanese car-maker, in partnership with British Gas, has applied to South Derbyshire District Council for 17,000 solar panels to be sited within the grounds of the factory.

Once operational, the panels would be capable of producing around 5% of the plant's electricity.

The panels would also help to reduce the factory's carbon footprint – saving 45,000 tonnes of CO2 over their lifetime.
