Super energy-saving devices in pipeline

Home appliances that save as much as 50% more power than their most energy-efficient versions today could hit the markets in about a year under a government's rewards plan for manufacturers.

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), an agency of the power ministry, is set to launch a 'super efficient equipment programme' to encourage manufacture of products that are 30-50 % more efficient than fivestar labeled goods, considered to be most energy efficient in the country.

Siemens launches new wind turbine for Indian market

Siemens Energy Sector today said it has launched a new wind turbine for the Indian market.

The new product SWT-2.3-113 (Direct Drive) with leading technological edge was launched at Wind Power India International Conference and Exhibition 2011 at Chennai.

With this launch, Siemens intends to utilise its engineering expertise in energy efficiency to strengthen its local presence by manufacturing and supplying range of wind turbines, the company said in a statement.

TRAI released its recommendations on “Approach Towards Green Telecommunications”.

With increasing pervasiveness of mobile phones and the widespread adoption of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) worldwide, the ICT sector is expected to contribute around 3% of the global emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) by the year 2020. While globally the telecommunication sector contributes around 0.7% of the global GHG emissions, the corresponding figure in India is 1%.

India, China looking to cooperate in energy sector

Ahead of the BRICS summit in China's resort town of Sanya, where Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will be meeting Chinese President Hu Jintao, a senior Indian diplomat has said that new and renewable energy sources are expected to be one area where the two neighbours can cooperate to their mutual benefit.  

"We hope to discuss it at our first Strategic Economic Dialogue, slated for this year," the China Daily quoted Indian Ambassador to China, S. Jaishankar, as saying.

India's first smart grid to be built at a cost of over Rs 100 crore will become operational in the Eletronic city, housing major IT and other electronic companies such as Infosys and Wipro, over the next two years.

The pilot project taken up by the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) with USAID acting as a technical consultant will enable the distribution utility to serve customers through digital technology saving energy, besides reducing cost and increase reliability.

India would like to step up cooperation with China in energy sector, specially in the field of green technologies to boost trade ties, which in turn could help to build mutual trust to overcome differences, Indian ambassador S Jaishankar said.

New and renewable energy sources are expected to be one area where the two can cooperate to their mutual benefit, he told official China Daily on the eve of the BRICS summit being held in China today.

Cabinet clears solar policy among other decisions

The state cabinet on Wednesday took a number of decisons. At a meeting presided by chief minister Asok Gehlot it cleared the Rajasthan State Solar Policy 2011 along with a new policy on land allotment at concessional rates. 

Apart from making the immovable assets of all the officers of the civil services in the state public, Gehlot said the same may be implemented for the state cadre officers too.

Ireda to raise $300 million from Japan

State-owned Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (Ireda) will in a few months raise $300 million, or Rs1,326 crore, in debt from the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA), said chairman and managing director Debashish Majumdar.

Ireda is currently negotiating the terms of the loan. “The process should have been completed by now, but it’s been delayed because of the tragedy in Japan,” Majumdar said.

Ireda is a non-banking finance company which functions on the lines of Power Finance Corporation and Rural Electrification but with a mandate to fund only... Read more..

Carbon Credit Capital plans $100-m fund for renewable projects

The US-based Carbon Credit Capital proposes to launch a $100-million India-specific fund this year to invest in renewable energy projects.

“We would start with $100 million this year and will eventually increase it to $500 million,” said Ms Olivia Fussell, President, Carbon Credit Capital.

The carbon financing firm will invest in a range of projects across all renewable technologies such as solar and biomass among others.

Powergear inks pact with Gestamp Wind Steel

Powergear Ltd, a Bangalore-based electrical equipment manufacturer for energy sector, has entered into a joint venture (JV) with Spanish wind power firm Gestamp Wind Steel to manufacture wind towers near Chennai with an initial investment of Rs 150 crore.

The JV company would set up a 20 acres greenfield manufacturing facility at Sricity, a planned integrated business city 60 Km away from Chennai.
