Govt approves National Water Mission

New Delhi, Apr 28 : The government today gave its nod to National Water Mission under National Action Plan on Climate Change.

The Mission aimed at "conservation of water, minimizing wastage and ensuring its equitable distribution both across and within States through integrated water resources development and management" was approved by Union Cabinet in its meeting presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Indian dams had more water than usual in April

India has more than the usual quantity of water in its mega dams at the end of April, according to statistics released by the Water Resources ministry.

The numbers crunched by the ministry shows that at the end of April, the average water level of 81 of India's biggest dams is around 60% higher than that of last year and the 10-year average.

"The combined live storage in these 81 reservoirs stood at 31% of designed capacity as on 28.04.2011," the ministry said in a statement today.

Global Warming Reduces Expected Yields of Harvests in Some Countries, Study Says

Global warming is already cutting substantially into potential crop yields in some countries — to such an extent that it may be a factor in the food price increases that have caused worldwide stress in recent years, researchers suggest in a new study.

Corn yields were off a few percentage points in China, Brazil and France from what would have been expected, said the researchers, whose findings were published in Friday’s issue of the journal Science.

The government of India’s ambitious plans for renewable energy have grown incrementally in the last few years, with it quadrupling its target for solar capacity only this year. Vermicompost to be used in PCMC gardens

The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has made it mandatory for all contractors, who maintain the gardens of the municipal body, to use the vermicompost generated at the Moshi garbage depot. The decision was taken at a review meeting of the Moshi garbage depot on Tuesday.

Speaking to TOI, municipal commissioner Ashish Sharma said, "the plant, set up at the Moshi garbage depot in 2008, has the capacity to generate 30 to 40 tonnes vermicompost per month. Jairam lifts stop-work order on Maheshwar Hydel project

Union Minister for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh has lifted the stop-work order on the Maheshwar Hydel Power Corp Ltd., implying that he was yielding to pressure from the Prime Minister's office and Madhya Pradesh politicians across political lines.

India aims to add 17,000 megawatts of renewable energy over five years starting 2012, a top government official said on Thursday, stepping up the country's focus to develop clean energy sources.

Climate change panel: renewable energy to be key

The world's top scientific body concluded that renewable energy in the coming decades will be widespread and could one day represent the dominant source for powering factories and lighting homes, according to a draft report obtained by The Associated Press Thursday.

The country is set to introduce new fuel efficiency standards in April to force auto companies to produce cars that give you more kms for every litre of fuel. The standard called Corporate Average Fuel Economy (Cafe) will give auto manufacturers time till 2015 to improve raise fuel efficiency of car s by about 18%, up from the average of 14.1 km/litre of petrol to 17.3. Technopark phase-III building gets LEED gold rating

The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) has granted a ‘gold' certification to the IT building of the ongoing phase-III project of Technopark here.

A new assessment of climate change in the Arctic shows the region's ice and snow are melting faster than previously thought and sharply raises projections of global sea level rise this century.

Garbage disposal to resume in Kannur

The Kannur municipality has taken steps to resume garbage disposal, Municipal Chairperson M.C. Sreeja said at a press conference here on Tuesday.

Garbage disposal was affected following protests by residents near the civic body's landfill at Chelora.

Steps had been taken to revive the collection of household garbage by Kudumbasree units. The garbage collected by them would be brought to the ramps set up at the Stadium Corner and Ayikkara and loaded into ‘dumper placers.'
