Low carbon report discusses only policy optionsIn a far cry from its proactive and out-of-the-box approach to climate change in the international fora, India appears to be playing it safe at home. Instead of a road map, the Planning Commission-appointed expert group on strategies for low carbon growth has merely established through a series of calculations that the country can meet its Copenhagen commitment. The expert group, headed by the commission's former member for energy Kirit Parikh, submitted its interim report on Monday, which was delayed by over a year. The interim report appears more an exercise in quantifying... Read more.. Date : May 11 Source: Economic Times

Proper implementation of policies can reduce carbon emission: PanelAn expert group constituted to plan a low-carbon growth for the country has concluded that India can comfortably reach its target of 20-25 per cent reductions in its emission intensity by the year 2020 compared to 2005 levels, even while pursuing a growth rate of 9 per cent. This expert group, led by former Planning Commission member Kirit Parikh, was constituted in the wake of the 2009 climate change conference in Copenhagen, to suggest policies and initiatives for a low-carbon roadmap for India. This group submitted its interim report today. The interim report says that... Read more.. Date : May 10 Source: Indian Express

Companies see a realistic chance of bringing down cost of solar powerIt's an old idea whose time has finally come. Converting the sun's energy into electricity, or solar power, is a compelling proposition. It's clean and green, with an endless supply of fuel (from the sun). It's also faster to set up: a farm of solar cells to trap the sun's energy can be installed in six months; by comparison , a nuclear plant would take a decade, and thermal and hydro projects four to six years. Making the case for solar power stronger are the growing risks associated with conventional power - from pollution and galloping costs... Read more.. Date : May 10 Source: Economic Times

Asia technology comes clean to provide green solutionsClimate change sceptics might not like to admit it, but Asia is embracing environmentally-friendly technologies. China is spending tens of billions of dollars every year on renewable energy projects - almost twice the next biggest spender in this field, the US - while South Korea's clean energy capacity more than tripled in 2009. In fact, growth in what the industry calls the clean tech, or environmental technology, sector looks set to take off. The figures speak for themselves. The population of Asia is expected to grow at more than double the... Read more.. Date : May 10 Source: BBC

Govt panel says carbon growth cut possible by upto 35%India could reduce the growth of carbon emissions by up to 35 percent by 2020 over 2005 levels -- if it gets international finance and technology, a government panel for low-carbon strategy said on Monday. Asia's third-largest economy set a goal for slowing the growth of its emissions in 2009, saying it will try to rein in its "carbon intensity" -- the amount of carbon dioxide emitted per unit of economic output -- by between 20 and 25 percent by 2020, from 2005 levels. With an eye on finite reserves of fossil fuels, it said it was imperative for India to improve efficiency... Read more.. Date : May 10 Source: Economic Times

Lines drawn ahead of COP17The 17th UN conference on climate change in Durban is still six months away and yet the lead-up to it hardly suggests that it will be a cordial affair or that any substantive agreement will be forthcoming. Judging by the intensity of the exchanges and the views expressed at a World Economic Forum plenary on the upcoming conference yesterday, there remain formidable obstacles toward finding real solutions to the problem of global climate change. The differences over what needs to happen to curtail global emissions and get funding to pursue alternative energy sources dominated... Read more.. Date : May 9 Source: Business Report

Indian minister makes environment his businessAfter six years of arduous bureaucratic struggles and political wrangling, a major project finally took off last week. The South Korean steel major Posco signed a memorandum of understanding in 2005 to build a 510 billion rupee (Dh41.93bn) steel mill in the eastern state of Orissa. It was the biggest foreign direct investment in India's history. But Posco's path to India was far from smooth: it faced regulatory hurdles from the government; came under fire from human rights activists for human displacement at the mill site; and faced violent protests by indigenous tribes in... India revives energy ties with IranIn a visible attempt to re-engage with Iran’s energy sector, India has submitted a reworked master development plan for Iran’s Farsi natural gas block. A consortium led by ONGC Videsh Ltd (OVL), the overseas arm of state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp. Ltd, won the bid in 2002, but is yet to develop the gas block. While OVL is the operator of the Farsi block, in which it holds a 40% stake, Indian Oil Corp. Ltd has an equal stake and the balance 20% is held by Oil India Ltd. The block cannot be developed without a master plan. The plan, submitted last month, could... Read more.. Date : May 9 Source: Livemint.com
