Suzlon Energy Says Rising Orders `Absolutely Sufficient' to Pay Loans

Suzlon Energy Ltd., India’s biggest maker of wind turbines, said it’s booking orders fast enough to be able to pay off 100 billion rupees ($2.2 billion) in refinanced loans starting in April next year.

“It’s absolutely sufficient,” Chief Financial Officer Robin Banerjee said in a telephone interview. “Every bit of our strategy now seems to be working.”

Last April, Ahmedabad-based Suzlon had to refinance 100 billion rupees in loans taken from banks such as Citibank Inc., Deutsche Bank AG, Barclays Plc, State Bank of India and ICICI Bank Ltd. after the global financial crisis.... Read more..

Climate change will hurt wheat producing states’

'Green India Mission to improve quality, quantity of forests'

The Centre has worked out an ambitious project as part of the national action plan on climate change to improve quality and quantity of forest cover in the country, Union Minister Jairam Ramesh said today. 

 
"The mission will be accorded approval at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in Delhi on February 22," the Minister for Environment and Forest said.

Equatorial Palm Oil JV with India’s Siva Group is now set up

Equatorial Palm Oil PLC (LON:PAL) (EPO) said the joint venture agreement with Indian conglomerate, the Siva Group, has been fully implemented. The deal was initially flagged in September 2010.

The JV company has now received US$22.5 million in cash from Biopalm Energy, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Siva Ventures. EPO itself is investing US$7.5 million into the JV.

The deal also includes a US$30m loan facility to accelerate the development of EPO’s palm oil operations in Liberia.

A British renewable energy major is providing photovoltaic solar panels and other equipment as part of the Indian government''s plan to provide free shelter in the slums of Kolkata and other parts of the country.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday stressed that emerging economies were in no position to tackle climate change compared with developed countries which had caused the problem.

India won widespread praise for showing new flexibility at the UN Cancun climate talks in December, where it appeared willing to reconsider its previous reluctance to sign up to a binding deal to cut emissions.

Reliance Power’s Sasan project gets carbon credit nod

Reliance Power announced on Thursday that its Sasan Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP) has been registered with Clean Development Mechanism Executive Board (CDM-EB) of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The registration with CDM-EB allows Sasan Project to earn certified emission reduction (CER) credits, each equivalent to one tonne of carbon-dioxide (CO2). These CERs can be traded and sold, and will result in significant additional revenues for the super-critical ultra mega power project.

Taiwan Increases Offshore Wind Tariff 30 Percent

DigiTimes reports that new feed-in tariffs posted by Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs have increased offshore wind tariffs by more than 30%.

While DigiTimes's report emphasized the cuts in solar photovoltaic tariffs, Taiwan has substantially raised its tariffs for wind energy.

The new tariff, says DigiTimes, is 5.56 TWD ($0.192 USD) per kWh, 33% more than the previous tariff of 4.2 TWD ($0.145 USD) per kWh.

The new Taiwanese feed-in tariff for offshore wind now rivals that of Ontario's offshore feed-in tariff of $0.19 CAD per kWh.

Finnish 'clean tech' firms look for joint venture in India

PepsiCo reaping rewards of sustainable supply chain

PepsiCo is among those businesses benefiting from sustainable procurement, with the US beverage giant uncovering more than $60 million in energy savings opportunities.

The Carbon Disclosure Project 2011 Supply Chain Report, produced by management consulting firm A.T. Kearney, looked at climate change actions and performances of 57 leading global companies and 1,000 of their suppliers across a broad cross-section of industries.

More Companies Finding Cost and Carbon Savings in Supply Chains

More major companies are tracking their supply chain emissions, and many, along with their suppliers, are also saving money from reducing carbon.

The Carbon Disclosure Project's latest supply chain report looks at what the 57 members of its Supply Chain program and 1,000 of their suppliers have been doing to integrate climate change into their businesses.

A number of India's key crops are experiencing the effects of climate change, experts say.

H Pathak, an investigator with the Indian Agricultural Research Institute's Climate Change Challenge Program, said global warming isn't limited to a rise in average temperatures.

Inox Renewables Ltd., a unit of Gujarat Fluorochemicals Ltd., an Indian maker of refrigerant gases, plans to buy the wind energy business of its parent for an undisclosed sum.
