Australia to set fixed price on carbon

Australia will set a fixed carbon price from July 1 2012 on an interim basis until a full emissions trading scheme can be introduced in 3-5 years, the government said on Thursday.

KEY POINTS

* No decision yet on what the set price would be or how much industry and households would be compensated for the new costs.

* Greens party, key independents side with govt on deal

PM's council approves Green India Mission

The National Mission for a Green India, part of the country's plans to fight the climate change, has been approved by the Prime Minister's Council on Climate Change, the environment ministry said Wednesday. 

 
The mission, one of the eight under the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC), projects an ambitious target of 10 million hectares of forest cover by 2020 at a cost of Rs.460 billion (Rs.46,000 crore/$10 billion).

India’s First Renewable Credit Trading Day Attracts 136 Bids

India’s largest power exchange began trading the country’s first renewable-energy credits, saying the new commodity may develop a liquid market by year-end.

The first trading session today on the Indian Energy Exchange received 11 buy bids seeking certificates from solar plants and 125 bids for certificates for renewable energy from wind, hydropower or biomass projects, according to Jayant Deo, chief executive of the exchange.

“We should see some liquidity roughly in 10 months,” Deo said by telephone from New Delhi.

Air India aims to become India's 1st green airline in one year

National air-carrier, Air India, aims to become the country's first green airline soon having initiated the process a couple of years ago, a senior official said.

India is 3rd largest emitter of global carbon after China, US

India is the third largest contributor to global carbon emission after China and the United States, Environment and Forests Minister Jairam Ramesh today said in the Rajya Sabha.
Admitting this in a written reply, Mr Ramesh said based on the 2008 data, China generated 22.3 per cent of the carbon dioxide emitted followed by the United States with 19.9 per cent, India with 5.5 per cent, Russia with 5.24 per cent and Japan with 4.28 per cent.

Climate change creates longer ragweed season

 A changing climate means allergy-causing ragweed pollen has a longer season that extends further north than it did just 16 years ago, U.S. scientists reported on Monday.

In research that gibes with projections by the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, plant and allergy experts found that ragweed pollen season lasted as much as 27 days longer in 2009 than it did in 1995. Nestle to buy slightly less palm oil in 2011

Nestle (NESN.VX) will buy slightly less palm oil in 2011 due to changes in its products, and is confident of hitting its year-end target of buying 50 percent of supplies from sustainable producers, the the world's biggest food maker said on Tuesday.

"It's mostly because of the way our receipes are evolving. It is not the result of a strategy," Jose Lopez, chief operating officer, told Reuters in an interview on Tuesday, adding it was also because of changes in demand for the firm's product mix.

Adani forms JV with Carbon Energy to bid for UCG projects

Adani Group on Friday said it has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with an Australia-based firm Carbon Energy to form a joint venture to pursue Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) projects in India.

Toyota to launch home electric car chargers in 2012: Nikkei

Toyota Motor Corp will launch home battery chargers for electric and plug-in hybrid cars next year as it starts selling new models of environmentally friendly cars, the Nikkei business daily reported on Sunday.

The chargers, which will be compatible with non-Toyota cars, will come in two types, the Nikkei reported, citing company sources. One would extend from the exterior wall of a home and the other would be for setting up in a garage.

Investing in greener economy could spur growth - UN

Channelling 2 percent, or $1.3 trillion, of global gross domestic product into greening sectors such as construction, energy and fishing could start a move toward a low-carbon world, a report launched on Monday said.

The investment would expand the global economy at the same rate, if not higher, as under present economic policies, said the report by the U.N. Environment Programme (UNEP).

The proposed Rs 200 crore waste-to-energy plant at Okhla in south Delhi is all set to be operative from July this year, officials said today and tried to allay apprehensions of residents and NGOs over possible environmental impact of the project. Loans under JNNSM at 5% not violation of base rate norms: RBI

The Reserve Bank today said banks financing power generation equipment under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) at a concessional 5 per cent interest rate is not violation of norms.
This financing below the base rate would not be considered violation of guidelines, RBI said in a statement.
"We advise that such lending at interest rates not exceeding five per cent per annum where refinance of Government of India is available, would not be considered to be a violation of our Base Rate guidelines," it said.

India Coal Tax May Be Used to Fund Transmission Lines for Renewable Plants

India may use money raised from a tax on coal producers to fund new transmission lines that would help distribute power from clean energy projects.

A proposal is being prepared for the Finance Ministry to distribute the money to states expecting significant amounts of renewable energy capacity that don’t have the infrastructure to utilize the power that will be generated, said Pramod Deo, chairman of the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission.

Posco and LanzaTech to Collaborate on Renewable Energy

LanzaTech has signed a memorandum of understanding with Posco :  , one of the largest steel producers in the world, covering the implementation of its gas fermentation technology to convert the steel maker’s flue gases to ethanol and other value added products.

KfW earmarks 800mn euros for India renewable energy projects

German government-owned development bank KfW plans to lend 800 million euros in the 2011-12 calender year to finance various renewable energy projects in India.
"We have already financed around 1.5 billion euros in the energy sector in India. Heavy rain due to manmade warming: Study

Human beings may be partially to blame for the increasing intensity of rain and snowstorms, says a new climate study published on Thursday.

This is the first time human-induced rise in greenhouse gases has been directly linked to intensity of extreme rain and snow. The study in Nature journal examined data from across the northern hemisphere, including India, and found that the intensity of extreme rainfall and snow had gone up in recent years.

According to reports, Delhi government has come up with a Cabinet note for solar power units on rooftops of households in the Capital.

After speaking to all stakeholders, the government is finally ready with the policy, according to which anyone can use their roof to set up a solar power unit.
