Thomson Reuters to Buy Point Carbon for Energy Sales

Thomson Reuters Corp. said it will acquire Point Carbon A/S, a Norwegian provider of energy and environmental information, to bolster offerings in this field.

The transaction will close “in the coming weeks,” New York-based Thomson Reuters said in a statement today. Terms of the deal, which gives the company modeling capabilities for the carbon, power and natural-gas markets, were not disclosed.

Green investment? Indian cos want tax sops

A majority of Indian companies feel tax incentives from the government are needed to accelerate adoption of energy-efficient business practices, according to a survey.

According to the survey by workspace solutions provider Regus, though India [ Images ] has been criticised for its high emission levels, around 30 per cent companies here monitor their carbon footprint.

Projects under lens, carbon credits dip

India, the second largest supplier to the UN emissions market, received 51% less carbon credits in the five months through May as regulators scrutinize the country’s projects.

Issuances of Certified Emission Reduction (CER) credits to India in the UN Clean Development Mechanism, the world’s second biggest greenhouse gas market, fell to 5.86 million, from 11.96 million in the same period last year, according to UN data on Bloomberg. Worldwide issuance rose 13% in the period.

India opposes carbon tax on imports

India has opposed suggestions that countries that have cap-and-trade schemes to control carbon emissions—mostly developed countries—impose a carbon tax on imports from nations that don’t have such measures in place, made at the ongoing global climate talks in Bonn.

“The matter of any unilateral trade measure on imports in the name of climate action raises some concerns regarding the success of our discussions,” Vijay Sharma, secretary, ministry of environment and forests, said in his intervention on Tuesday.

Fresh hurdles may further delay Polavaram project

Polavaram, the mega irrigation project, is faced with fresh setbacks that threaten to further delay its execution.

The Irrigation Department invited fresh tenders nine months ago to have the project's earthen dam, rockfill dam, spillway and its 960-MW hydel powerhouse to be embedded in the dam, implemented as a single unit by a single agency to avoid the delay suffered earlier under two consortia of firms whose agreements, however, were scrapped.

India Boosts Grid-Connected Clean Energy by 16% in 2009-10

India boosted the amount of clean energy capacity connected to the national grid by 16 percent in the financial year ended March 31, the government said. The South Asian nation added 2,330 megawatts of capacity from renewable sources including solar, wind, water and biomass, bringing the total to 16,817 megawatts, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said in a statement yesterday.

Suzlon Heads to Seven-Month Low After Unexpected Loss

Suzlon Energy Ltd. India’s biggest maker of wind turbines, was headed to the lowest level in almost seven months in Mumbai trading after unexpectedly reporting a fourth-quarter loss.

The shares fell 6.3 percent to 57.20 rupees at 10:11 a.m. local time, poised to reach the lowest level since Nov. 4, when they were at 55.20 rupees. The stock has declined 37 percent this year compared with a 3 percent drop in the benchmark Sensitive Index.

Cancun talks may bring in no accord

The climate conference in Mexico this year may not witness any legal accord on cutting greenhouse gases or fund commitment for the countries vulnerable to climate change impacts, two leading climate change experts said yesterday.

Solar-powered LED Lamps to Bring Green Energy to India’s Rural Areas

Two companies, MIC Electronics and Beltron Telecom Green Energy Systems Ltd (BTGES), have signed an agreement to distribute 330,000 LED lamps in the rural areas of the Indian state of Bihar. The aim is to distribute 10 million lamps in the nest three years.

Garbage piles to be cleared in a day: PMC

After blocking garbage dumping for five days, villagers of Mantarwadi, Urali-Devachi , Phursungi and Bhekrainagar withdrew their agitation on Friday evening following discussions with the municipal corporation and the district officials.

Natural gas pipeline deal struck between Iran and Pakistan

In reaction to the countries growing energy requirements that have caused severe electricity shortages, Pakistan has now signed a $7.6 billion natural gas pipeline deal with Iran.

The deal between the two countries was reached in Turkey on Tuesday.  Initially, the pipeline was intended to supply natural gas to India, but officials in Delhi withdrew from negotiations over the deal last year.
