India gets its first foreign direct investment (FDI) in the power sector after 54 months when a Singapore-based company committed to invest in 1,320 megawatt ultra-critical thermal power plant coming up in Andhra Pradesh. Up to 100 per cent FDI is allowed in the power sector in the country.

Singapore's Sembcorp will be investing Rs 1,100 crore to pick up 49 per cent stake in the Rs 6,869 crore phase-I of the thermal power plant of the Gayatri Group, the city-based infrastructure company, to come up at Krishnapatnam in Prakasam district.

ONGC Profit Rises 71%, Beating Estimates, on Higher Oil Prices

Oil & Natural Gas Corp., India’s biggest energy explorer, posted a 71 percent increase in fourth- quarter profit, beating estimates, as crude oil prices rose.

Net income climbed to 37.8 billion rupees ($815 million) in the three months ended March 31 from 22.1 billion rupees a year earlier, the New Delhi-based company said in a statement to the Bombay Stock Exchange today. The median of 19 analysts estimates compiled by Bloomberg was a profit of 34.8 billion rupees.

Sujana Energy To Develop LED Lighting Products For India

Sujana Energy Limited (SE), part of $1.3 billion Sujana Group, declared that it has inked a strategic partnership deal with Japanese Nichia Corporation in order to formulate technology for energy-efficient lighting products in the country.

Under the deal, Sujana will make investment of around $5 million to make LED (light-emitting diode) lighting products for homes, offices and streets at its plant located in Madhapur.

Ad agencies asked to use solar power

In the first significant attempt to promote the use of solar power in the city and reduce greenhouse gas emission , the environment department has asked all billboard agencies to go green or get blacked out.

“All backlit billboards have to sever grid or generator connection and go solar. Those using grid electricity have to make the switch by December, but those powered by diesel generators have to switch from June 5 — World Environment Day,” said environment department principal secretary M L Meena.

World's energy use projected to increase 49 percent by 2035

The Energy Information Administration said world marketed energy use is expected to grow 49 percent between 2007 and 2035, driven by economic growth in the developing nations of the world, according to the International Energy Outlook 2010 Reference case.

Total marketed energy consumption decreased by 1.2 percent in 2008 and by an estimated 2.2 percent in 2009 as manufacturing and consumer demand for goods and services also declined. In the Reference case, total world energy use increases 49 percent, from 495 quadrillion Btu in 2007 to 739 quadrillion Btu in 2035.

Neyveli Lignite eyeing Indonesia, South Africa coal mines

Integrated mining and power producer Neyveli Lignite Corporation Thursday said it is exploring possibilities for buying coal mines in Indonesia and South Africa.

Massive hydropower plant likely for Tibet

China has plans to construct the world’s biggest hydroelectric plant in Tibet, officials said.

While no plan has yet been drawn up, Zhang Boting, the deputy general secretary of the China Society for Hydropower Engineering, said research has been conducted on the project. But the Web site of a government agency suggests that a 38-gigawatt hydropower plant is under consideration.

General Motors Co. will develop an electric vehicle for India after scrapping a venture to make battery-powered compact models with Reva Electric Car Co.

Sembcorp plugs into Indian energy market; Subsidiary set to acquire 49 per cent stake in key power generation firm

SINGAPORE is on the verge of clinching one of its largest investments in India with the purchase of a $319 million stake in a key Indian power generation company.

Sembcorp Utilities, a subsidiary of local energy and water provider Sembcorp Industries, is set to acquire a 49 per cent stake in Thermal Powertech Corporation India (TPCIL) in a joint venture with Gayatri Energy Ventures (GEVL).

India Mulls Mandatory Solar Energy for Tower Back-Up Power Supplies

­The Indian government is reported to be considering mandating solar panels as a back-up power supply for base stations - replacing the existing diesel-based generators more usually found in the tower housing.
