KNR mulls hydel, pipeline foray

Hyderabad-based KNR Constructions is looking at bidding for hydel power and pipeline projects, its executive director K Jalandhar Reddy said.

This is its first tryst with either kind of projects. Roads and irrigation are the company’s mainstay.

“We are exploring the possibility of developing hydel power projects, and are in the initial stages of studies,” Reddy said. He added that the company was also thinking of signing joint ventures to bid for oil and gas pipeline projects. “Again, nothing has been firmed up yet,” Reddy said.

BTS makes plans to launch cleantech fund in India

Zurich and Mumbai-based PE firm looks to raise up to $200M to invest in wind energy, biomass, hydropower, and energy efficiency.

Before the second quarter of 2010 is over, there could be a new source of funding for cleantech companies in India, according to VC Circle.

Private equity firm BTS Investment Advisors says it’s looking to raise a new $100 million to $200 million fund, which would focus on the clean energy sector in India. BTS expects to launch the fund in the first or second quarter, and is in the end stage of developing the fund’s strategy.

Solar mission goal may be scaled down 80 per cent

The goal of India's solar energy mission to produce 20,000 MW of power from the sun by 2022 may be reduced by as much as 80 per cent before the Prime Minister formally inaugurates the mission in New Delhi Monday, official sources said.

The sources said Friday that the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission may now have the goal of producing 4,000 MW for the grid from solar energy instead. The mission is one of the eight announced as India's National Action Plan on Climate Change.

Carbon tariffs resurface in Copenhagen aftermath

The idea of a carbon tax at the EU's borders is gaining momentum after the Copenhagen climate talks, with French President Nicolas Sarkozy leading calls for a tariff on imports from China and other nations with less stringent environmental protection rules.

India Will Meet Its Copenhagen Climate Commitment, Ramesh Says

India will include its proposal to limit greenhouse gases through 2020 in the Copenhagen climate- change agreement, meeting a pledge made last month, the environment minister said.

FTSE 100 firms on track for CO2 target

Companies in the FTSE 100 are on track to meet Britain's 2020 carbon emissions targets, despite lax commitments from the heaviest polluters, a report showed on Thursday.

On average, FTSE 100 companies have pledged to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 2.5 percent annually, in line with what is needed to reach the first milestone en route to deep cuts by 2050, the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) said.

Cleantech investment down 33%

Investment in cleantech companies fell 33 percent to $5.6 billion in major markets in 2009 from the prior year, according to preliminary findings by the Cleantech Group and Deloitte.

Cleantech companies raised the money in 557 deals in North America, Europe, China and India in 2009.

"Record levels of activity from investors, governments and corporations in 2009 demonstrated that the market for clean technologies continues to strengthen regardless of any non binding global climate change agreement," said Nicholas Parker, Executive Chairman, Cleantech Group.

Half of money managers ignore climate risks: survey

Nearly half of global money managers are making investment decisions without factoring in risks or opportunities associated with climate change, according to a survey released on Wednesday by a coalition of environmentalists and investors.

A related report recommended that money managers and institutional investors do climate risk assessments on all investments and encourage the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to encourage full disclosure of climate risks.

BHEL bags order to set up solar plant in Karnataka

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has bagged a Rs42-crore contract from the Karnatka Power Corporation Limited for setting up of an eco-friendly grid-interactive solar plant of 3 mw capacity, on a turnkey basis in the state.

The contract is for setting up of a solar photovoltaic power plant at Yapalaniddi village in Raichur district of North Karnataka, a release said.

The new industrial policy of the Delhi government, which was approved on Monday, seeks to make the national capital a global hub for clean, high technology industries and services sector.

Topsun Energy Ltd., a solar module manufacturer and turnkey solar photovoltaic power plant solution provider company is planning to build a 5-megawatt (MW) grid connected power plant in state of Gujarat, India.

Govt to adopt low carbon growth route

To meet the target of 20-25 per cent reduction in emission intensity for a unit of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2020, the government has decided to adopt low carbon growth pathway from the financial year 2010-11.

An expert group headed by former Planning Commission member Kirit Parikh will recommend the profile of cleaner technologies for the government to adopt in a bid to achieve the emission intensity target — listed in the Copenhagan accord — in the next 40 days.
