India must not lag behind in climate change initiatives

The Copenhagen meet made “limited progress” and no one was satisfied with the outcome, the Prime Minister, Mr Manmohan Singh said on Sunday, while observing that taking the path of low greenhouse gas emissions was the only alternative and India “must not lag behind” on this.

Inaugurating the 97th Indian Science Congress, Mr Singh acknowledged that results of last month’s climate summit, that saw sharp differences over issues of emission cuts and accountability, had left no one satisfied.

However, he said, India should aspire to be among the world leaders in climate-friendly... Read more..

Electrification through biogas

BANGLADESH still remains an agrarian country. Because of increasing population growth, the amount of per capita cultivable land is dwindling very fast. In order to survive as a nation, and to prosper in the 21st century, Bangladesh will have to shift from an agrarian economy to an industrial one. Consequently, power generation will have to increase substantially to achieve that goal and measures to achieve countrywide transmission coverage should be initiated on a priority basis. Electricity is an essential pre-requisite for technological progress and economic growth. Bangladesh has been... Read more..

Good news on hydel

There’s welcome action on the power front. NTPC, our main thermal generator, has inked a pact with Bhutan to construct a 600 mw reservoir-based hydel project on the Amo Chhu river, for cross-border sale of power.

The move promises to shore up hydro-electric potential in this decade, and so arrest the falling hydel-thermal ratio that has been dropping for years. India, after all, is committed to building hydel projects aggregating a capacity of 10,000 mw by 2020 in Bhutan.

For grid stability, the ideal hydel-thermal ratio is deemed to be 40:60; yet, by 2005, our hydel share... Read more..

New green revolution by the government

Call it green revolution. To achieve the twin objective of promoting education among girls belonging to poor farmer families of Vidarbha in Maharashtra and those affected by Cyclone Aila in West Bengal and spreading the green word through a single programme, the ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE) is distributing solar lanterns to families below poverty line (BPL) which have girls studying in classes 6 to 12.

About 65,000 such lamps have been already distributed to farmers in Vidarbha and around 14,000 to people in the Sunderbans who were devastated by Aila.

Five economic reasons why 2010 will be greener

In 2009, the global recession had a greater impact than all the diplomatic efforts that ended in the Copenhagen flop: energy production hadn't declined on such a scale since 1981, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). Here are five economic reasons for the world to become slightly greener in the coming year (just a few of them could be wishful thinking...)

First, high oil prices. Pricier crude encourages investments in alternative energy sources. Crude oil has been trading in a fairly narrow - and reassuringly expensive - range of $64 to $80 a barrel since June. It is... Read more..

Copenhagen accord has inbuilt hazards: Ramesh

The Copenhagen accord on climate change was a partial success for India but it has certain "inbuilt hazards" of which the developing countries have to be wary, Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh said in Varanasi.

"The accord has certain inbuilt hazards and the developing world, especially India, has to be wary on those accounts.

"The foremost risk is that the developed world could demand an end to the Kyoto Protocol (based on the principle of equity)," Ramesh, who was here yesterday to review the progress of the Ganga river cleanliness programme, told reporters.

CO2 pumped deep underground could make energy projects more efficient

Scientists have proposed that carbon dioxide (CO2) pumped deep underground for storage could be used to make geothermal energy projects more efficient.

According to a report in Discovery News, this combined system could double the efficiency of geothermal energy capture, while also making carbon storage projects more feasible

"I think it's really exciting because one of the big problems with most geothermal energy and carbon capture and sequestration seems to be that the economics of either doesn't quite work unless there's some sort of subsidy on the geothermal side... Read more..

Pushing the envelope on solar energy research

Can algae be genetically engineered to produce sufficient quantities of biomass for fuel? Can “solar” nanostructures, used like paint on the exterior of buildings and cars, help to harness sunlight to give us energy and destroy pollutants in the air?

Science may have some answers that could make irrelevant the anger of environmentalists directed at politicians who failed us at Copenhagen by not agreeing on concrete and legally binding cuts in greenhouse gas emissions.

Report: Global smart grid investment to top $200bn by 2015

According to a new report by Pike Research, spending on smart grid technologies is expected to reach $200bn between 2008 and 2015 as governments and industry leaders drive an overhaul of grid infrastructure across the globe.

In the report, the key market motivators driving the smart grid build-out fall into four categories: improving reliability and security, improving operating efficiencies and costs, balancing power generation supply and demand, and reducing the overall electrical system's impact on climate change.

Barriers to this transformation go beyond pure technical... Read more..

French constitutional body rules against carbon tax

France's planned carbon tax cannot be applied because it includes too many exemptions, a French government body ensuring laws are constitutional ruled on Tuesday, in an embarrassing setback for the government.

The tax on carbon-emitting products, meant to encourage consumers to save energy and use less fossil fuels, is one of President Nicolas Sarkozy's most loudly defended initiatives and was meant to come into effect on Jan. 1, 2010.

"The exemptions included in the carbon tax run counter to the aim of fighting climate change and create inequalities with respect to public... Read more..

Japan's reluctance to sell nuke reactors to hit India

Admitting they had 'differences' over civilian nuclear cooperation, which India considers a key component for its energy security, the prime ministers of India and Japan on Tuesday decided to work around the problems to raise their bilateral strategic profile.

However, Japan will not be supplying nuclear reactors and other material for India's civilian nuclear sector any time soon, thereby limiting India's options to quickly develop its atomic power segment and generate the electricity it needs to fuel its developmental needs.

"We discussed civil nuclear cooperation. This... Read more..

Is clean tech the next bubble?

The past decade saw investors do a tap dance to the tune of Boom and Bust. First there was the dot-com bubble and the slew of other technological breakthroughs that came with it. Then we witnessed the supposedly invincible housing market complete a jaw-dropping boom-bust cycle. The young 21st century even delivered a notable financial bubble, as well as its inevitable bust.

Sidling along in the background were the seedlings of an industry on the verge of taking flight — alternative-energy technology.

Despite a drop in the overall volume of venture-capital deals last year,... Read more..

Self-serving calculations behind carbon tariff proposal

As the international community strives to fight climate change, some developed countries have proposed carbon tariffs as a way to tackle global warming.

This move has raised eyebrows globally and left developing countries deeply concerned that it may be a disguised form of trade protectionism.

It is generally believed that carbon tariffs, if introduced, will not only undermine the global drive to fight climate change, but also hurt global trade and economy. Analysts believe that some developed countries intend to protect their own interests by touting carbon tariffs.    ... Read more..
