Discoms may be paid for costlier gas

The new Union power minister might be entrusted with an unfinished job — insulating distribution companies from the rise in power generation costs that might arise due to a higher gas price.

According to a proposal by the ministry, a two-year subsidy plan will compensate distribution companies for the purchase of power worth more than Rs 5 a unit this year, and Rs 5.5 a unit from 2015-16.

The subsidy will, however, be limited to generation based on gas from nominated fields. The package will benefit gas-based power plants, with a combined generation capacity of 10,382 Mw.... Read more..

Toshiba wants to buy Alstom power grid business from GE: Nikkei

Toshiba Corp (6502.T) will offer to buy Alstom's (ALSO.PA) power grid business for "several hundred billion yen" if General Electric Co (GE.N) completes its planned purchase of Alstom's energy business, the Nikkei newspaper reported.

GE has offered to buy Alstom's energy business, which makes power generation systems along with power grids, for about $16.9 billion.

The French company said last week it was reviewing GE's offer but has also given Germany's Siemens AG (SIEGn.DE) until the end of May to make a rival bid.

NGT slams MoEF and state governments for neglecting solid waste disposal

National Green Tribunal (NGT) Bhopal bench has slammed Union ministry of environment and forests (MoEF), Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan governments for not implementing municipal solid waste (MSW) rules framed in 2000 and for also not furnishing satisfactory replies in this regard. 

Green panel has asked for personal appearance of principal secretaries of urban administration department from the three states and deputy secretary and above ranked officer from MoEF dealing with MSW rules to explain their stand before May 8, the next date of hearing.

Delhi air worst in the world

Delhi has the most polluted air in the world. A World Health Organization (WHO) air quality database of 1,600 cities and 91 countries released on Wednesday shows that the concentration of PM2.5 (fine, respirable particles) is the highest in Delhi at 153 micrograms per cubic metre (g/m³) when the WHO standard is just about 10g/m³. The fine, particulate pollution which is considered most dangerous for health is way higher in Delhi compared with many other crowded Asian cities, including Beijing which has a PM2.5 level of 56g/m³, Karachi (117g/m³) and Shanghai (36g/m³).

The offer was made at the 11th Kazakhstan-India Inter-Governmental Commission (IGC) meeting that took place on April 24 and 25 in Kazakh capital Astana.

Renewable energy ministry opposes anti-dumping duties on imported solar modules

Suzlon Energy announces cashless restructuring of FCCBs worth $485 million

 The Suzlon Energy Ltd today said its board of directors approved a proposal for cashless restructuring of its existing foreign currency convertible bonds (FCCBs).

The company and an ad-hoc committee of bondholders ended negotiations and agreed on the proposed restructuring terms. The ad-hoc committee comprises select bondholders with significant holdings across each of the existing bonds, the world's fifth-largest wind turbine maker said in a statement.

GE makes $389 million share tender offer for Alstom's India units

General Electric Co(GE.N) on Monday made tender offers to buy shares worth up to $389 million in two of Alstom SA's(ALSO.PA) India units to comply with local rules, following its $16.9 billion bid to buy the French group's energy unit.

GE has offered to buy 25 percent in Alstom T&D India Ltd (ALST.NS) from public shareholders at 261.25 rupees a share in a deal valued at up to $278 million, according to a notice issued to Indian stock exchanges by the offer manager Credit Suisse.

SWaCH to scale up e-waste collection

The collection and proper disposal of e-waste in the city is set to get a fillip with waste pickers' collective SWaCH (Solid Waste Collection and Handling) having obtained a licence from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB).

"We have received our licence from the MPCB and we really hope that we can scale up the collection of e-waste," said Pratibha Sharma from SWaCH.

Waste water to save South Corporation parks

With depleting water levels in south Delhi, the municipal corporation is finding it difficult to maintain its parks, especially the ornamental ones.

Although South Delhi Municipal Corporation has borewells in most of the big parks, officials say 10-15% of these have dried up. Solar gear importers likely to face steep dumping duty

India is likely to impose a steep duty on importers of solar cells following vociferous complaints from domestic manufacturers, threatening the viability of about 4,000 Mw of recently tendered solar power projects across the country. 

Although the ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE) did not disclose the numbers, the officials said on the condition of anonymity that the duty is likely to be high given that the initial investigation has found the dumping rate to be about 80%.

The Pune bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) headed by justices V R Kingaonkar and Ajay Deshpande on Monday directed the civic body to float fresh tenders for appointing a firm for treating biomedical waste in the city. In the process, the NGT cancelled the temporary assignment given to an Ichalkaranji-based firm.

MERC allows Adani Power compensatory tariff of Rs 1.01/unit

In a major relief to Adani Power, Maharashtra electricity regulator MERC has allowed the power producer to charge Mahavitaran an additional Rs 1.01 per unit as compensatory tariff for 800 mw. 

The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) in an order today allowed Adani PowerBSE 1.65 % to charge a compensatory tariff of Rs 1.01 per unit for only 800 mw. With this, the total power purchase cost from the 800 mw works out to Rs 3.65 per unit.
