UP SMEs looking to tap solar energy

The Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) in Uttar Pradesh are looking at tapping solar energy to deal with persistent power cuts and insulate against rising electricity tariffs.

The 30% central subsidy provided on solar power installations has only added to the attractiveness of the proposition. After subsidy, a typical solar power system costs about Rs 1.40 lakh per kw capacity, although the final price largely depends upon the battery strength.

“We have undertaken solar energy as a mission and our members are actively exploring the opportunity of installing solar power... Read more..

India looks to cut carbon emissions from deforestation

India, one of the world's largest polluters, has drafted a national policy aimed at reducing its carbon emissions from deforestation as part of a global scheme which financially rewards developing nations for carbon stored through forest preservation.

But some environmentalists are sceptical, saying the move is unlikely to yield results as previous compensation schemes have not led to serious cuts in emissions.

India has the tenth largest forest coverage in the world. It is also the world's fifth... Read more..

Wind looks to profit from coal's decline

Coal currently generates about 37% of America's electricity supply, a fall from almost 50% in 2008. Nearly 21GW of coal-fired electricity generation has retired over the past five years, representing 6.2% of US's 2009 coal fleet, and power companies have announced plans to shutter another 34GW.

A recent study by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) suggests the retirements are unlikely to end there, identifying tens of thousands more megawatts that are "economically vulnerable" under current market conditions.

Environmental regulations are a major factor in the transition... Read more..

Over 500 textile units in Pali pollute water

JAIPUR: There is little that the Rajasthan Pollution Control Board (RPCB) can do to check pollution. Under the board's watchful eyes, for years the Bandi River and Nehra dam in Pali have been turning into reservoirs of chemical effluents released without treatment from the textile units in Pali. Ironically, even when the National Green Tribunal (NGT) intervened and ordered closure of textile units operating without the necessary approval from RPCB, 546 units without consent to operate, continued to function.

Uttarakhand report: Time to rethink our development models

The June 2013 disaster in Uttarakhand had taken many — including the state administration — by surprise. But it should not have been so because it was a tragedy waiting to happen. The immediate reason may have been a natural cause — the state was hit by its heaviest rainfall on record that month, causing lakes and rivers to burst their banks, inundating towns and villages downstream — but the collateral damage was excessively high because of the successive state governments’ desire to build hydropower projects in a fragile ecosystem.

This view has now been corroborated by the... Read more..
