'India needs to invest $834 bn to lower emissions by 2030'

 India will have to invest $834 billion in the two decades ending 2030 to reduce its emission intensity to gross domestic product (GDP) by 42 per cent over 2007 levels, according to a Planning Commission expert group.

According to the final report of the expert group on low carbon strategies for inclusive growth, the massive change in the energy mix by 2030 will result in lower annual demand of coal at 1,278 million tonnes from an estimated 1,568 million tonnes.

Fuel subsidies rising in emerging markets

 London: Fossil fuel subsidies cost governments in emerging markets more than $500 billion every year and are a major contributor to climate change, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA) and International Monetary Fund (IMF). 

The biggest subsidies are concentrated in the Middle East, North Africa, Asia and parts of Latin America, according to the IEA's Fossil Fuel Subsidy Database.

NGT directs Mahagenco to strictly follow clean coal norm

NAGPUR: In a setback to Mahagenco, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has asked the power utility to strictly abide by the union ministry for environment and forests' (MoEF) notification which calls for use of clean coal technology to bring down pollution levels and menace of fly ash generated by inferior coal quality. The January 2 notification prohibits coal and power utilities from using the coal having over 34% ash content citing threats to environment and public health.

4 firms adopt BARC’s technology to detect water contamination

 While taking a technology to the market is considered a difficult process by scientists, four companies have taken up a cost-effective visual detection tool to detect fluoride content in groundwater, developed by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC). The latest technology transfer to the fourth company was made on Tuesday.

According to BARC, fluoride contamination in groundwater is widespread in India and nearly 90 million, including six million children, are affected with skeletal fluorosis (debilitating bone ailments), non-skeletal fluorosis and dental fluorosis.

India has found US, Chinese, Taiwanese and Malaysian solar-equipment makers dumped products in the local market, according to a document sent to parties involved and obtained by Bloomberg News.

The dumping caused "material injury" to domestic manufacturers Indosolar Ltd., Websol Energy System Ltd. and Jupiter Solar Power Ltd., according to a document dated today and signed by D.P. India installs a record 433 MW of solar electric capacity in March 2014

India added 418 MW of grid-tied solar photovoltaic (PV) and concentrating solar power (CSP) capacity and 14.6 MW of off-grid PV during March 2014, according to figures released by the nation's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
This is nearly double the 257 MW installed a year ago, and the most commissioned in any one month to date. This brings the nation to 754 MW of grid-tied and 34.4 MW of off-grid solar electric systems installed during fiscal year 2013–2014, which ended on March 31st, 2014.

IBC Solar begins construction of 5.5MW solar plant in Rajasthan

German PV manufacturer and developer, IBC Solar has begun construction of a 5.5MW solar power plant in Rajasthan, India.

IBC Solar is to deliver engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC), using its local subsidiary to develop the proposed solar power plant. Completion of the project is expected in June 2014.

The plant is to be located in Bhadla, in the district of Jodhpur, in leading solar state Rajasthan.
