Everyone is cutting their carbon emissions—except India

The 30% cut in US carbon emissions proposed today by the Obama administration only directly affects companies operating in the US, but the policy is aimed as much—possibly more—at the rest of the world as at Americans. The developing world will be responsible for almost all growth in greenhouse gases in the next couple of decades.

The proposal allows the United States some leverage in international climate change negotiations, where Chinese and Indian representatives have argued that the US should take the lead in reducing emissions because of its historical... Read more..

Soaring heat pushes up spot power prices

The ongoing heat spell, coupled with congestion in the transmission capacity, has led to a surge in power prices in the spot market — a fortnight after the completion of the general elections. This is the time when spot prices ease. However, the unusual trend, which has seen prices rise past Rs 4 a unit, might not last long.

Water: Allocations same, usage may change

The formation of Telangana on June 2 would make no difference to the allocation of water that both Telangana and residual Andhra were getting as part of a united Andhra Pradesh.

Neither would Telangana be allocated more water, nor would residual Andhra lose any allocations already made by the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal I and II to the two regions prior to the division. This is because the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act seeks to protect the allocation of waters made to various projects, existing and new ones, in the two regions. And, the water utilisation... The first thing the prime minister, Narendra Modi, needs to do is raise the scale of ambition in the sector. If the stated... Read more..

Obama's carbon curbs nullified by expanding China, India

US President Barack Obama is set to take his boldest step to halt the rise of the oceans and stop the warming of the planet.

It won't be enough unless the rest of the world follows.
Trimming carbon emissions from US power plants by 25 per cent in coming decades, as Obama is said to be proposing, would be more than overwhelmed by increases in China and India where coal-fired power plants are springing up and new cars are rolling out of showrooms.
