Civic body eyes waste segregation at sourceTo ensure that no waste goes to waste, the civic body is mulling a project to segregate the bio- degradable and non-bio degradable waste at the source itself, a practice followed in most of the developed cities across the world. However, due to the enforcement of the poll code, the project would only take off by December this year. Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) will be launching the pilot project in ward no -55, which includes areas like Shakti Nagar, Saket Nagar and localities around AIIMS. "Since the process of disposal is different for different types of waste, it is best to... Read more.. Date : Oct 27 Source: Times of India

More lethal greenhouse gasIn September, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Barack Obama agreed to discuss how hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which are hundreds to thousands of times more potent global warming compounds than carbon dioxide, could be phased down. They agreed, bilaterally and at the G20 summit, to use the expertise and institutions of the Montreal Protocol and report emissions under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Action on HFCs offers some common ground in the protracted climate negotiations, potentially creates commercial opportunities for Indian firms, and... Read more.. Date : Oct 25 Source: Economic Times

India says GM flouted emissions test regulationsGeneral Motors India appears to be up to some shenanigans. In July, the company had its first vehicle recall since 1995 when 114,000 Chevrolet Tavera sport utility vehicles needed to be brought in over "emission standards and other regulatory specifications," according to Reuters. A government official who declined to be named told Reuters that the global automaker has been flouting testing regulations since that time. "The report has pointed out that it is in the nature of corporate fraud," the government official said. It looks like all of the alleged cover up was being done by GM... Read more.. Scientists unveil energy-generating 'smart' windowScientists in China said on Thursday they had designed a "smart" window that can both save and generate energy, and may ultimately reduce heating and cooling costs for buildings. While allowing us to feel close to the outside world, windows cause heat to escape from buildings in winter and let the Sun's unwanted rays enter in summer. This has sparked a quest for "smart" windows that can adapt to weather conditions outside. Today's smart windows are limited to regulating light and heat from the sun, allowing a lot of potential energy to escape, study co-author... Read more.. Date : Oct 25 Source: Times of India

Lower tariffs drive big solar dreamsThe sun is literally shining bright for India's green energy sector. And the government is taking a leap of faith by conjuring up unheard of mega-scale solar power plants as tariffs head south since the launch of Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) in January, 2010. Solar power tariffs have come down to Rs 8.50 per unit from Rs 18 a few years ago, removing one of the major impediments to the sector's growth. Rates are expected to drop further as projects gain economy of scale. Even at current tariffs, the non-conventional and renewable energy ministry (MNRE) considers... Read more.. The government has been claiming since September that prices will fall, first by the middle of the month, then by the middle of October and now by next week. Transparency must for nuclear power plantsAfter so many hiccups, the first unit of the Koodankulam nuclear power plant has been synchronised with the southern power grid. Production will be stepped up in stages and, hopefully, it will not be long before the grid receives 1000MW power. The addition will significantly improve the availability of power, particularly in the south. Unlike hydel power that is dependent on the water level in dams, nuclear power is, generally speaking, free from the vagaries of nature. In other words, there will be greater assured supply of power to the grid. This is certainly a great achievement, more so... Read more.. Date : Oct 24

India blocks talks to cut greenhouse gases using ozone treatyIndia is blocking an international plan to reduce the polluting gases used in air conditioners and refrigerators, saying negotiators are trying to use the wrong treaty to bring about changes. International envoys have sought to bypass log-jammed United Nations climate-treaty talks by handing responsibility for reducing hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs, to the Montreal Protocol. That’s an instrument designed to protect the ozone layer rather than the climate. India’s envoys tried to strike proposed amendments to the protocol from the agenda of a week-long meeting in Bangkok,... Read more.. Date : Oct 24 Source: Livemint

In Tamil Nadu, solar is hotTamil Nadu is hot for solar. Even before the state-mandated ‘solar purchase obligation’ has kicked-in, and before power purchase agreements are signed for a big bunch of projects, a number of solar projects are coming up in the State. Most of the investors are textile businessmen, who want to avail themselves of the ‘accelerated depreciation’ benefit — which allows them to depreciate the solar plant by 80 per cent in the first year, so that the consequent dip in taxable profits helps avoid paying tax. These businessmen used to put up windmills to get AD. Ever since the sop was... Read more.. Date : Oct 23 Source: Business Line

Eco-friendly: Going green a priority for Indian companiesSpending four months in India as an American scholar concerned about global environmental issues, it was enlightening to see what Indian companies are doing to put themselves on apath toward sustainable growth. Based in Pune, conversations with people in large and small companies yielded surprising results. To be honest, India’s global image on environmental issues is not a great one. It ranks low on Yale’s Environmental Performance Index, and enforcement of environmental laws is generally thought to be uneven. So, it could be assumed that sophisticated sustainability efforts would... Read more.. Date : Oct 23 Source: Economic Times

India, US dig in against EU air carbon chargeIndia voiced firm opposition on Tuesday to EU plans to impose a scaled-back carbon charge on flights over European airspace while a senior U.S. lawmaker said the EU proposal runs afoul of a law intended to shield U.S. airlines from such charges. The European Commission, the EU executive, last week proposed to make all airlines pay for emissions over European airspace in a retreat from a suspended EU law that covered the duration of flights using EU airports. India said the EU proposal defies a global aviation agreement hammered out in Montreal earlier this month at an... Read more.. Date : Oct 23 Source: Reuters

Global non-energy companies out to harness solar powerWhat do Google, Walmart and Apple have in common? Apart from the fact that they are deep-pocketed American companies, they also happen to be solar investors. Recently, Google announced it would spend $103 million (Rs 630 crore) to buy a chunk of a solar farm in California. Incidentally, this investment would take Google’s total spends on clean energy beyond the $1-billion mark. COLLECTIVE MESSAGE Walmart did not have to go to solar farms. The retail giant has one resource needed for solar plants: it has 89 MW of solar power plants, mounted on 215 rooftops. These are but two,... Read more.. Date : Oct 22 Source: Business Line
