Making sustainable intensification work on sound evidence

A new narrative is slowly taking hold of today's collective thinking about productivity, growth and poverty reduction in developing-country agriculture: the concept of sustainable intensification.

Sustainable intensification hinges primarily on practices and technologies that help farmers systematically improve the management of their crops, soil, trees, livestock and water — what I will call 'new agronomy'. It is essentially a focused approach to helping farmers simultaneously improve yields and manage natural resources sustainably.

New agronomy covers a range of practices... Read more..

Ranjangaon to get e-waste recycling unit

The city and Pimpri-Chinchwad will produce an estimated 3,500 tonnes of e-waste by 2015, said a 2007 report by Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). However, none of it can be treated here as there is no Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) recycling facility in and around the city.

At present, it has to be transported to authorized recyclers in Mumbai, increasing both the cost of treatment and its carbon footprint. "We recognize the problems of transporting all the e-waste generated in the city to Mumbai. A proposal has been prepared to set up a large state-of-the... Read more..

Delhi worst hit by air pollution: Study

If you did not consider air pollution a major threat, then think again. Scientists from the Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute (CNCI) at Kolkata have been studying air pollution in Delhi and Kolkata for over 15 years now. In their study, they have found that the alveolar macrophage (AM) per unit level was about two to three times higher in subjects from Delhi than in subjects from less-polluted towns.

The study has made a direct correlation between PM 10 levels (particulate matter) in different parts of the capital and the AM response which acts as a defence system to the lungs... Read more..

Improved air conditioners can save India 60000 MW

The India-US climate cooperation agreed to during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's recent summit meeting with President Barack Obama will also include a focus on improving the energy efficiency of air-conditioning in India, which has the potential to avoid as many as 120 large power plants of 500 MW each, and to help avoid brownouts and blackouts. More importantly, it has the potential to significantly reduce the import of fuel for power plants, thereby reducing the vexing issue of the current account deficit that the finance ministry and the new Reserve Bank of India governor are trying to... And Justin didn't even mentioned India's acute and growing water shortages

A few short years ago the assumption that coal demand was essentially endless in China and India was seen as irrefutable. Now this 'coal consensus' is breaking as analysts from Citi Bank to Bernstein predict a rapidly approaching peak in Chinese coal demand. But while the end of the Chinese coal bubble has generated headlines the situation in India has flown entirely under the radar. Now the Indian coal bubble may have popped and no one seems to realize they're standing in the rubble.

To understand the depth and extent of the Indian coal bubble you have to first understand the... Read more..

Local sourcing mandatory in Phase II of solar projects

Cocking a snook at the US, which had objected to compulsory local sourcing conditions imposed in the first phase of India’s National Solar Mission, the country is all set to extend similar norms to the second phase as well.

Domestic sourcing conditions would, however, be imposed on just 50 per cent of capacity earmarked for the second phase, a senior Government official has said.

But, this may fail to pacify the Americans as the Ministry for New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) has decided to expand the coverage of local sourcing norms to include solar thin films, mostly... Read more..

New nano-material could boost solar panel efficiency as high as 80%

Conventional solar cells based on photovoltaic technology have come a long way in recent years, but they’re still missing a big chunk of the electromagnetic spectrum. The silicon semiconductors in a solar cell are geared toward taking infrared light and converting it directly to electricity. Meanwhile, the visible spectrum is lost as heat and longer wavelengths pass through unexploited. A new nano-material being developed by a group of researchers spread across the country could act as a “thermal emitter,” making solar power significantly more efficient by scooping up more of that wasted...
