Mitzuki to launch solar products in India

Japan-based Mitzuki Corporation Ltd is entering the Indian market with the introduction of solar-powered products. The company, which is part of the UAE-based Legend Group, is introducing solar water heater, heat pump, solar inverter, solar lights, security cameras and other home security products.

Wind brings weekend relief from power cuts

For the Tamil Nadu government the answer to the power crisis appears to be blowing in the wind.

Over the weekend, the state's windmills came to the rescue of Chennaiites who have been reeling under the searing May summer and extended power cuts. Tamil Nadu electricity board (TNEB) relaxed curbs on power supply in most parts of the city on Saturday and Sunday as about 2,800 megawatt (MW) of power was generated through wind energy.

New technology to instantly convert solar energy into electricity

A Vijayawada-based solar energy equipment manufacturer, Jyothi Solar Power Projects has claimed that by using two new technologies together with the existing photo-voltaic (PV) panel system, 91 per cent of the Sun’s energy could be converted into electrical power.

At a meeting to showcase the technologies here on Saturday, P. Lakshminarayana, Director-Technical of the company said they had applied for patents.

Promoting solar at expense of wind power is dangerous, says Gamesa MD

 
The wind power industry in India has been bogged down primarily by policy issues, resulting in capacity additions falling to 1,700 MW in 2012-13 from 3,200 MW in 2011-12. Hopes went up after generation based incentives (GBI) were announced in the Budget 2013, but there has been no sign of implementation of the policies. BSES Yamuna Power goes green, will install solar panels at nine premises

As a part of its eco-friendly initiative, Delhi's power distribution company BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) has decided to install solar panels at its nine premises.

The Rs six crore project is expected to generate 450 KW energy, which will help BYPL save over Rs 50 lakh annually, a company official said today.

Kerala PSUs to switch to solar power

The Kerala government is going all out to source solar energy for a number of state-owned public sector undertakings (PSUs). Ten more such units under the department of industries are looking to switch over to solar energy soon. These include Travancore Cochin Chemicals, Steel and Industrial Forgings Ltd, Steel Industries Ltd, Malabar Cements, Kerala Minerals and Metals Ltd, Sidco and Kinfra are in the fray for solar switch-over, said P K Kunhalikkutty, minister for industries.

Suzlon loses top spot in India wind market installations

Suzlon Energy Ltd ceded its position as India’s top wind-turbine supplier in the year ended 31 March for the first time in at least a decade, according to figures from an industry group.

Wind World (India) Ltd, formerly known as Enercon (India) Ltd, took the top spot after installing 454 megawatts (MW) of turbine capacity last fiscal year, according to data from the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers’ Association. Suzlon trailed with 415 MW of installations, while ReGen Powertech Pvt. Ltd was third with 273 MW.

Emission at Sterlite within permissible limit: panel

 
An expert committee appointed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has found the emissions from all the stacks at the Sterlite’s copper unit at Tuticorin to be “within the permissible limit” prescribed by the Central Pollution Control Board when the plant was in normal operation.
 
The committee is headed by Prof. P. S. T. Sai from IIT Madras.
 
The committee is given the brief to measure emissions, and examine the working conditions of machinery at the copper unit of Sterlite Industries at Tuticorin.

Lanco’s solar cell-making plant to start by mid-2014

Lanco Solar Private Ltd, a unit of the Hyderabad-based Lanco Group, would kick-start the 300 MW photovoltaic (PV) solar cell manufacturing plant in the special economic zone (SEZ) in Rajnandgaon of Chhattisgarh next year.

“By (mid) next year we will be able to produce solar cells and the facility would be able to produce 300 MW cells when completely done,” Satyendra Kumar, Chief Technology Officer, Lanco Solar told mediapersons.

At present, the plant manufactures only solar modules. The group is investing Rs 3,000 crore in the unit.

‘Industrial estates should have facility to generate solar power’

The State Government should allot land in the new industrial estates proposed to be launched in the southern districts for solar power generation, according to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Consumers Association (TECA), Coimbatore.

Exim Bank secures 150-million euro loan to fund green projects

The Exim Bank today said it has signed an agreement for a 20-year 150-million euro laon from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to support projects that contribute to climate change mitigation.

The borrowings under the facility will enable Exim Bank to lend for energy projects, notably wind, solar photovoltaic, concentrated solar power, hydro-power, geothermal, biomass and efficient co-generation, Exim bank said in a statement.

Solar power equipment makers ask government to push manufacturing

Solar power equipment makers on Thursday asked the government to encourage manufacturing in the country under the second phase of its flagship plan - Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission.

"In the second phase of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) indigenous manufacturing should be encouraged," said Satyendra Kumar, Chief Technology Officer, Lanco Solar.

Welspun Energy to Develop 60-Megawatt Solar Plant in South India

Welspun Energy Ltd., India’s biggest developer of solar projects, said it will build a 60-megawatt solar power plant in south India after winning a local government auction.

The company is in talks with banks to raise 4 billion rupees ($74 million) to fund the project in the state of Tamil Nadu, Managing Director Vineet Mittal said today in Chennai. In December, Tamil Nadu had invited bids from developers to set up solar projects of as much as 1 gigawatt in capacity.

Govt to grade solar rooftop equipment

 
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is working on an exercise to grade solar rooftop equipment, Tarun Kapur, Joint Secretary (Solar), MNRE, said here today.

Companies vie for Punjab solar energy project

A large number of companies have bid for the proposed 300 MW solar photovoltaic power projects by the Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA).

Punjab non-conventional energy minister Bikram Singh Majithia said more than 30 companies participated in the bidding process and total bids for 270 MW were received against targeted allocation for in-house capacity of 300MW of solar power projects.

Bids will be evaluated to verify technological competence of the bidders, based on which, the price bids of the qualifying companies shall be opened, said Majithia.

India to declare 2013 as Water Conservation Year

With per capita availability of water depleting at a faster pace, the government today approved a proposal to declare 2013 as Water Conservation Year under which awareness programmes will be launched for conservation of the scarce natural resource.

Under the proposal, which got the nod of the Union Cabinet, the Water Resources Ministry will launch a series of programmes among masses, especially children, on water conservation.

India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is seeking to defer penalties on about $1 billion of solar-thermal power projects that are delayed by a lack of water, financing difficulties and equipment shortages.

AP to offer more sops for solar units

Andhra Pradesh Government has decided to offer some more sops to encourage solar power generation in the State.

This includes additional subsidy of 20 per cent for roof top units on behalf of the State. This will be in addition to the subsidies offered by the Centre.

First it was Germans, then the Britons and now a company from Poland wants to help clean up 340tons of toxic waste lying in the abandoned Union Carbide factory in Bhopal - the site of world's worst industrial disaster.
