Government should give easier access to funds for solar sector: FICCI

To give a boost to domestic solar energy projects, a separate window under the National Clean Energy Fund (NCEF) should be created to provide easy access to finance for such clean energy technology, industry body Ficci has said. 
 
"A FICCI White Paper on reducing the cost of finance for solar energy projects through the National Clean Energy Fund (NCEF) has suggested creation of a separate window under the Fund to enable easier access to funds," a statement said.

Himachal to go for re-bidding in Kinnaur hydropower project

The Himachal Pradesh government Tuesday decided to go for re-bidding of a multi-million dollar hydropower project that is currently under litigation between the Netherlands-based Brakel Corp. and Anil Ambani-led Reliance Infrastructure.

The cabinet, presided over by Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, also decided to reject the representation of both the companies to re-allot the 960-MW Thopan-Powari-Jangi project in Kinnaur district to them, a government spokesperson said.

IFC Plans to Lend $50 Million to Indian Solar Power Company

nternational Finance Corp., the World Bank’s private-sector financing arm, plans to lend as much as $50 million to an Indian solar developer for building and operating power projects.

Acme Solar Energy Pvt. will use the proceeds for a 25- megawatt grid-connected photovoltaic power plant in the state of Madhya Pradesh, according to a statement on the IFC’s website. The funding may be extended to other Acme projects in the states of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, according to the statement.

Chinese know-how for garbage-to-power project

Ramky Enviro Engineers, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s (GHMC) private partner in undertaking the Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management Project at Jawaharnagar, will be soon taking up construction of the four-stage garbage-to-power plant to utilise 2,400 tonnes of garbage generating 48 MW power daily.

Suzlon implements $1.8 billion debt recast plan

Wind turbine maker Suzlon today said it has implemented the $1.8 billion (Rs. 9,500 crore) debt restructuring package that includes preferential allotment of shares to its lenders.

The completion of the Corporate Debt Restructuring (CDR) package would pave the way for Suzlon to normalise "business operations" and improve overall performance.

Besides lenders' owning shares of Suzlon, the plan would also provide a two-year moratorium on principal and term-debt interest payments.

Country's first solar thermal power plant to go on stream next month

Country's first solar thermal power plant developed by Chhattisgarh-based Godawari Green Energy Limited (GGEL) in Rajasthan would go on stream in May.

The 50-Mw Solar thermal power plant set up in Naukh village located in the Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan is reported to be the first plant in the country. GGEL, the flagship company of the HIRA group in the renewable energy sector had pumped in Rs 700 crore on the project.

Emmvee Photovoltaic Power Pvt Ltd has connected the first 5MW of its path breaking 20MW Solar Power Plant to the grid in Hindupur, Andhra Pradesh.

Rajasthan Becomes Second Indian State to Cross 500MW Solar Power Capacity

Welspun Energy ties up with NMIMS

Welspun Energy, India's biggest developer of solar projects, today said it has entered into a pact with Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) for exchange of knowledge and skills development in renewable energy industry.

Smart grid VC funding totalled $62 million in Q1 2013

Smart grid venture capital (VC) funding in the first quarter of 2013, totalled $62 million in nine deals, according to Mercom Capital Group, llc, a global clean energy consulting firm.

Mercom Capital said the quarter's funding was nearly identical to the first quarter of 2012, when the same amount was raised by smart grid companies but in 10 deals instead of nine. With the lone exception of home security and automation company Alarm.com's $136 million raise in Q3 2012, the pace of funding has remained largely unchanged for the past five quarters.

India's wind energy output up 1250% in a decade: Report

India has aggressive renewable energy targets and industry energy efficiency policies. But it faces significant infrastructure challenges which may derail otherwise good policy.

This is mentioned in a report on the country’s national climate policy by Climate Policy Initiative, a US-based global policy effectiveness analysis and advisory organisation.

Solar Mission Phase II tariff fixed at Rs 5.45 a unit

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy proposes to fix a tariff of Rs 5.45 per kWhr for solar power projects that would be awarded under the Phase II of the National Solar Mission, according to ‘Draft Guidelines’ released by the Ministry today.

Those who want to put up solar power projects will now be asked for bid for ‘viability gap funding’ that would be given by the Government.

The Government intends to provide viability gap funding for 750 MW of capacity.

Delhi fails to draw upon green energy

When it comes to meeting renewable energy targets, the capital is among the worst performers. A report released by Greenpeace and Infraline Energy on Monday - which compares the strides made by 29 states to increase the share of renewable power in the total supply - shows Delhi's lack of ambition on this front. Bidding system revealed for phase II of India's solar mission

 
The second phase of India’s national solar policy will offer a new form of reverse bidding to install 750MW of solar capacity, the government has revealed in a draft policy.
 
This new form of reverse bidding requires the developer to quote the amount of money needed to construct the project to qualify for so-called viability gap funding (VGF) rather than quoting the electricity tariff to be paid by the electricity company as had previously been the norm.

India Offers to Foot Bill for 30% of Solar Construction Costs

India proposed to fund almost a third of solar-plant construction costs as it outlined rules for a second phase of project auctions today.

The country, seeking bids next month to build 750 megawatts of capacity, is offering grants of as much as 25 million rupees ($46,000) a megawatt or 30 percent of project costs, according to the draft guidelines published on the website of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

Mytrah Said to Pick Banks for Business Trust Offering

Mytrah Energy Ltd. (MYT), India’s third- largest wind farm developer, picked Morgan Stanley and Standard Chartered Plc to manage the Singapore initial public offering of some of its assets, two people with knowledge of the matter said.

Mytrah, whose investors include Henderson Global Investors Ltd., may raise about S$500 million ($404 million) by listing the assets as a business trust, the people said, asking not to be identified as the process is private. The IPO may take place in the second half of 2013, they said.

Animal waste to power lights, double as cooking gas

 
Animal waste from the city's abattoirs dumped with garbage has been raising health concerns. Now, a Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) project promises to convert part of such waste into power using biomethanation.
 
BARC has identified Villivakkam abattoir as one of the two places to set up three biomethanation plants in the city. At the Villivakkam abattoir, about 150 animals are slaughtered on weekdays and 200 on weekends. Some solar projects may escape local content rule

The Ministry for New and Renewable Energy proposes to have two categories of projects under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission — one with mandated domestic content and the other allowing use of imported equipment.

To participate in the National Solar Mission, developers have to buy solar cells and modules from domestic manufacturers and sign power purchase agreements with power plants under the mission.

In return, they receive benefits including subsidies through guaranteed long-term power tariffs.
