Govt initiates plan to push solar power in city schools

In a major step towards power conservation, the environment department of the city government has initiated the process of installation of solar power plants in government four schools and four hospitals. In a meeting on Monday, the department has awarded the installation solar panels to the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure department (DSIIDC).

Bihar set to use nuclear energy in agriculture

After encouraging farmers to adopt organic farming, the Bihar government is now exploring how farmers might benefit from nuclear technology, officials said on Wednesday.

V.B Patel, chairman of the horticulture department of Bihar Agricultural University (BAU) at Sabour in Bhagalpur district, said that nuclear energy could be used in plant breeding and for developing new varieties. Radiation could be used for mutation, he said, and nuclear energy could also be used to increase the shelf life of vegetables like potatoes and onions.

Dhanbad environment moratorium affects industrial sector

The industrial sector in Jharkhand is suffering due to the moratorium imposed in four districts of the state by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
 
Despite industrialists claiming that pollution levels have gone down due to the Dhanbad Action Plan introduced in 2011, the Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board (JSPCB) is not lifting the moratorium imposed on Dhanbad, Nirsa, Govindpur and Jharia.
 
This has led to loss in revenue and employment generation as new industries are not being set up in these areas.

India readying to take on absolute emission reduction cuts

India is preparing to take on absolute emission reduction cuts under the new global climate compact to be signed in 2015. As part of the preparation, the government is likely to commission four studies including one assessing by when India's emissions will peak in absolute terms.

The year when India's emissions trajectory peaks before it starts to dip is expected to influence the date from when the government will be ready to take on a cap in absolute terms on greenhouse gases under the 2015 agreement.

Power generation firms to be merged

The Delhi Cabinet on Tuesday took a decision to merge two of its power generational companies into a single unit in order to streamline operations. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said in order to ensure better functioning of the generating unit, the Cabinet has decided to merge the Pragati Power Corporation Ltd. (PPCL) into the Indraprastha Power Generation Company Ltd. (IPGCL), thereby retaining the latter’s name. The step is seen as facilitating a better result-oriented approach.

Aditya Birla Nuvo to sell unit for Rs 1.4k cr

 
Aditya Birla Nuvo has decided to sell its carbon black business to a group company, SKI Carbon Black (India), for Rs 1,451 crore, as part of its plan to exit the business in the near future.
 
An option being considered is to bring all carbon black business, including Columbia Chemicals’, under one umbrella and selling shares through an initial public offering. Earlier, the group had bought the carbon black business of Columbia Chemicals for $800 million.

Over 40 million tonnes e-waste generated globally each year: Kapil Sibal

Around 40-50 million tonnes of electronics waste is generated globally every year out of which India accounts for just 0.8 million, Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal today said.

"By the time, market in domestic industry becomes buoyant, people get concerned about enormity of the market and then western world starts yelling us that we must start managing e-waste," Sibal at an event organised by IFC and Attero.

DLF offloads wind power projects for $43.7m in India

 

Indian real estate developer DLF has offloaded its wind power assets in the states of Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan for INR2.4bn ($43.7m) to multiple acquirers.

The company's subsidiary DLF Home Developers has entered into an agreement with Tulip Renewable Powertech to sell the 34.5MW Tamil Nadu project for INR1.88bn ($34.26m)

The deal also includes the related assets, liabilities and long-term loans, reported the Hindu Business Line.

Corporation boost for solar city project

The cash-strapped Kochi corporation is planning to appoint an agency for preparing the detailed project report (DPR) for executing the solar city project. With the local body paying an annual electricity bill of about Rs 9 crore to KSEB, it is keen on starting the project in the current fiscal. The DPR is expected to cost Rs 10 lakh, which will be funded by the Centre.

CLP India runs out of gas

China Light & Power (CLP) India's 665-Mw gas-based power plant in Bharuch (Gujarat) has been shut for about a week, owing to no supply of gas from the Krishna-Godavari basin.

Earlier, it was planned the power plant would have additional capacity of 1,000 Mw. However, these plans have now been put on hold.

Reliance Industries (which operates the Krishna-Godavari basin wells) accounts for about a sixth of the plant's fuel requirements. The plant also draws gas from Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation and Cairn India.

 DLF Home Developers Ltd (DHDL), a subsidiary of India’s largest real estate firm DLF Ltd, will sell its wind energy projects in Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan as the parent seeks to shed businesses that aren’t its main area of interest and reduce debt.

Gridco likely to miss solar purchase obligation for 2012-13

State owned power trading firm Gridco is likely to miss its solar power purchase obligation for 2012-13. As per the renewable purchase obligation fixed by power regulator Odisha Electricity Regulatory Commission (OERC), Gridco was to purchase 25.75 million units of solar power.

But the bulk power purchaser has procured only 12.45 million units (mu) till December, leaving a deficit of 13.29 mu which seems unlikely to be met.

Cerebra gets nod from Karnataka Pollution Control board for recycling plant

Cerebra Integrated Technologies Limited has received clearance from the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board to establish its integrated 96,000 MT capacity E-waste recycling plant here, the company said.

The approval is for E-waste recycling, including processing and recovery of precious metals like gold, silver and platinum, the company Managing Director V Ranganathan said in a statement here.

Cerebra plans to complete the project by December this year and once commissioned, it would be one of the largest E-waste recycling plants in the subcontinent, he said.
