Green energy to get special lending window at public sector banks

 

The government is set to ask banks to carve out a special window for lending to renewable energy projects. The advisory may come as early as Monday when finance minister P Chidambaram meets state-run bank chiefs.

While lending to the power sector has consistently increased, there is preference to finance conventional projects, resulting in a meager loan flow for the renewable energy sector, sources privy to the discussions said. According to latest data, bank loans to the power sector added up to over Rs 4 lakh crore at the end of January 2013.

Delhi to get two waste-to-energy plants

Despite local residents repeatedly raising concerns over the “harmful effects of Okhla’s waste-to-energy plant on the environment and human health”, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has said two more such plants are under construction and the three will together “solve the problem of waste disposal in Delhi.”

The pollution watchdog of the Delhi government has given its consent to private firms to establish one plant each at Ghazipur and Bawana.

Church, civic body tie-up to dispose e-waste in Kochi

The Kochi corporation's move to solve the hazardous e-waste problem in the city has got a shot in the arm, courtesy the church.

With the civic body cornered on dumping plastic waste at the Brahmapuram waste treatment plant, the accumulating e-waste in the city area had become a major headache for the local body.

Wind farms, solar plants in the offing

With a view to tapping the non-conventional energy potential, the State government will set up a wind farm in association with NTPC for generating 200 MW of power.

Finance Minister K.M. Mani, in his budget for 2013-14, said a wind farm with a capacity of 22 MW would be set up at Kanjikode. Solar plants will be set up in the vicinity of substations and power houses for generating 60 MW of power. A plant will be set up for recycling used CFL bulbs. Open conference on water privatisation

Public Private Partnership (PPP) models in the water sector has fuelled debates about the viability of the model globally. 

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) had launched three pilot projects for 24-hour water supply in the city under the PPP model and based on its results the scheme would be applicable to the entire national capital.

State finally wakes up to renewable energy potential

The host of renewable energy projects announced in the State Budget suggest that Kerala has finally decided tap the resource to meet its energy demands.

Finance Minister K.M. Mani on Friday announced that a wind farm with a capacity to generate 200 MW would be set up with the help of National Thermal Power Corporation. Another wind farm with 22 MW capacity would come up at Kanjikkode.

The new proposals come at a time when neighbouring Tamil Nadu has virtually exhausted its wind energy potential.

Water Losses in India Cut in Half by Smart Meters: Itron

Itron Inc. (ITRI), the largest U.S. maker of metering devices that save energy and cut waste, said smart meters installed in Mumbai reduced water losses by half.

Smart meter use in India’s most populous city eliminated 50 percent of the 700 million liters (150 million gallons) a day of water that’s wasted or leaked by broken pipes, Marcel Regnier, Itron’s chief operating officer for water, said today from Paris. Itron is based in Liberty Lake, Washington.

Gujarat industrial players get relief from green cess

Major industrial players from the state have got relief from the Gujarat High Court which has held that the Green Cess Act, 2011, enacted to generate funds to promote clean energy, was unconstitutional and declared it as void.

India Set to Auction More Solar Capacity Than Planned This Year

 

India, which plans to raise solar capacity eightfold by 2017, will probably auction more megawatts than planned this fiscal year in a bid to cut chronic power shortages in the world’s second most-populous nation.

The government will tender 750 megawatts of capacity in the first week of May, kicking off the second phase of its National Solar Mission, said Tarun Kapoor, joint secretary at the New and Renewable Energy Ministry. India expects to auction more than the 1,650 megawatts targeted for the year through March 2014.

Two projects launched to popularise use of biofuel

Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar on Wednesday launched two projects — Hombelaku and Hongirana — to decentralise biofuel extraction units and to offer biofuel products under one roof.

The projects have been initiated by the Karnataka State Biofuel Development Board.

Mr. Shettar said the BJP government had given utmost importance to biofuel by setting up the Biofuel Task Force in 2008, bringing out the Biofuel Policy in 2009 and setting up the Karnataka State Biofuel Development Board in 2010. Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport recognised for "green credentials"

GVK’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) has been recognised for its environmental credentials.

The gateway, managed by Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), has been awarded ISO certification for its Carbon Emissions Accounting by Bureau Veritas.

In 2012, CSIA became the first airport in India and the second in Asia to be recognised for its efforts in reducing its carbon footprint.

CSIA is now in the process of upgrading its ACI Airport Carbon Accreditation rating from Level 1 to Level 2.

Solar issue: India, US to hold talks in Geneva on March 21

 
India and the US will hold consultations under the aegis of WTO on March 20-21 in Geneva on American allegations of discrimination against its products by New Delhi’s national solar mission.
 
“We have fixed March 20-21 for consultations. Our team will leave by March 18th,” a senior official in the commerce ministry told PTI.

Suez Subsidiary Degremont Wins India Water Treatment Contracts

Suez Environnement (SEV), Europe’s third- largest water company by market value, won 41 million euros ($53 million) of contracts to build and operate water-treatment plants in New Delhi and Bangalore, India’s Silicon Valley.

Suez’s subsidiary Degremont said today in a statement that the contract in India’s capital, where more than 17 million people reside, was awarded by the Delhi Jal Board to construct and manage a plant in which treated wastewater will be re-used by local industries and the Delhi Gate Nalla power plant.

KSEB plans to create 350 MW solar power capacity in 4 years

Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) plans to create solar energy capacity of 350 MW during the next four year-period, according to Aryadan Mohammed, electricity minister.

Briefing newspersons here on Wednesday, the minister said that the initial 50 MW is sought to be generated as early by December this year.

Of the 15 companies who had shown interest in the phase 1 bidding, six have been shortlisted and letter of intent will be issued to them soon.

Amid growing concerns over the quality and availability of water, the government is giving final shape to a policy that will allow citizens and other stakeholders to access hydrological information at the click of a mouse and also participate in informed decision-making.

Govt to invite bids for phase-II of solar mission only in May

Invitation of bids for grid-connected projects under the second phase of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) may get pushed back by a month or two, as the Government is yet to decide on covering more products under domestic sourcing norms.

The Ministry for New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), however, maintains that the Batch I of the second phase, which includes off-grid projects, will start from April 1 as envisaged in the JNNSM.

HSBC 'underweight' on Suzlon Energy, shares slip 5%

India's largest wind turbine supplier Suzlon Energy  dropped nearly 5 percent in morning trade on Wednesday after the foreign research house HSBC rated the stock `underweight'.

"We do not see the company generating sufficient cash from its operations to meet loan repayments," HSBC reasoned.

The target price for the stock is at Rs 9 a share, according to the report.

Shares dropped nearly 13 percent in six consecutive sessions. At 10:48 hours IST, the stock fell 2.76 percent to Rs 15.85 on Bombay Stock Exchange.

Mytrah Energy to acquire 59.75MW of India wind assets - NewNet

Mytrah Energy has agreed conditional terms to acquire 59.75MW of existing operational wind power assets in the Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra, according to a report by StockMarketWire.

The National Green Tribunal has issued a bailable warrant against the commissioner of South Delhi Municipal Corporation for failing to appear at a hearing.
