Railways to go green with own power company

Railways, a bulk consumer of energy, has proposed to set up a Railway Energy Management Company shortly to bring efficiency in energy consumption and help in power purchases.

At present, Railways foots a bill of Rs 9000 crore in electric consumption.

The company would be formed with 51 per cent equity by RITES and 49 per cent by Railways, railway board Member Kul Bhushan told reporters.

He said the company will be taking up all green energy initiatives and infuse "technological reforms and initiatives to bring energy efficiency and reduce energy consumption".... Read more..

Rail budget boost for wind power sector

Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal Tuesday granted a veritable boon to the beleaguered wind turbine sector by announcing a proposal for setting up 75 MW windmill units.

Presenting the railway budget for 2013-14, Bansal announced "setting up of 75 MW windmill plants and energising 1,000 level crossings with solar power".

He said that as a measure to protect the environment and to promote sustainable development, a railway energy management company will be set up to harness the potential of wind and solar power.

Suzlon Energy rallies on bagging ONGC order

Suzlon Energy has rallied almost 8% to Rs 22.90, after India’s largest wind-turbine maker said that it wins 103-megawatt (MW) order from Oil & Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC).

“The project comprises 49 units of Suzlon’s S88-2.1 MW wind turbines to be set up in the north western state of Rajasthan,” Suzlon Energy said in a regulatory filing.

Suzlon will complete the project in the financial year ending March 31, 2014, it added.

Country's biggest solar power plant to be set up in MP

Country's biggest solar power plant to generate 130 MW electricity would be set up in Neemuch in Madhya Pradesh. The ambitious project cleared by departmental advisory committee of the State department New and Renewable Energy, according to press release here on Tuesday.

1,000 acre land has been earmarked for the plant in Neemuch district. Renewable energy accounts for just five per cent in total energy generation in Madhya Pradesh. At present, work is underway for 311 MW solar power projects in the state.

EU Regulator to Provide Guidance on UN Carbon Offset Treatment

The European Union’s regulatory arm plans to provide guidelines on its treatment of imported carbon credits following a rule change in the bloc’s emissions trading system, according to a statement published today.

The European Commission advice covers the certification requirement for some United Nations carbon offsets, which are reductions that compensate for emissions made elsewhere, it said today on its website. The guidance will be made public before the changes to the bloc’s emissions registry come into force, according to the statement.

Starbucks to Eliminate Uncertified Palm Oil by 2015

Starbucks has agreed to purchase 100 percent of its palm oil from certified sustainable suppliers by 2015, according to Green Century Capital Management.

Starbucks made the change in response to a shareholder resolution filed by the Green Century Balanced Fund, which describes itself as an environmentally responsible mutual fund. Green Century was concerned about the environmental practices used to secure palm oil for many of Starbucks’ food products.

Country's first silicon making unit likely in Bhandara

Vidarbha may turn out to be the country's Silicon Valley. The region is high on the radar of public sector undertaking Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) which is planning to set up the country's first silicon manufacturing unit. Water solutions firm sets up Rs 110-crore facility in Savli

From providing water solutions management to water recycling and treatment system, a US-based water technology provider has set its eyes on the Indian markets. Xylem is all set to commission its manufacturing facility at Savli-GIDC in Vadodara by April this year. The Indian arm of $4 billion firm has already invested Rs 110 crore in the facility that that is spread over 22,000 square metres. India to Boost Solar-Power Capacity

India is moving forward with plans to increase solar-power generation capacity nearly eightfold to more than 10 gigawatts by March 2017, with the government prepared to spend up to 60 billion rupees ($1.1 billion) in subsidies to reach the target.

The total cost of the program will be around 700 billion rupees ($13 billion), Ministry of New and Renewable Energy Joint Secretary Tarun Kapoor said in a recent interview.

India nears renewables goal with 12.4GW added in 3 years

India, seeking to generate 30 gigawatts (GW) of power from renewable sources by 2017, increased capacity by 12.4GW in the past three years by adding wind, biomass, solar and hydro plants.

Wind power accounted for the biggest increase, at 8.3GW, the ministry of new and renewable energy said in a statement on the government’s website. India added 1.8GW of biomass, 1.2GW of solar and 1.1GW of hydro power in the three years through January.

AEG Power bags 30 MW solar power plant order

AEG Power Solutions, a global manufacturer of power electronic systems and solutions for industrial power supplies and renewable energies, has bagged a 30 Mw solar power plant project from Madhya Pradesh-based M and B Switchgears Ltd.

AEG Power Solutions Group is the sole subsidiary of the holding company 3W Power SA based in Luxembourg. The Group is headquartered in Zwanenburg in the Netherlands.

Tatas invest in Swiss solar tech developer Flisom

The Tata Group has been increasing its investment in the solar power business. The tea-to-telecom conglomerate recently invested in Zurich-based solar technology developer Flisom, which raised capital for the third time.

The group, through Tata Industries, is already a strategic investor in eight-year- old Flisom, which was spun off from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. Flisom, which also has other investors, will use the proceeds to set up a 15 MW solar module plant in Switzerland.

The city’s waste management plant may soon be set up in Kuthambakkam.

Of the 10 bids received by Chennai Corporation from private companies for the setting up of such plants to process municipal solid waste, six have proposed that such a facility be set up in Kuthambakkam. The four other companies had named Minjur as their preferred locality.

Govt to discuss Arunachal hydro projects on Tuesday

Cabinet secretary Ajit Seth has called a meeting on Tuesday to discuss issues relating to hydropower generation in Arunachal Pradesh.

With China planning to divert water from rivers that flow into the Brahmaputra to the arid zones of Xinjiang and Gansu, India is worried about the slow pace of work on projects awarded in the state that borders the neighbouring country.

DU college harnesses wind energy churned out by Metro trains

Students and teachers of Kalindi College, Delhi University, have come up with an innovative way to harness wind energy produced by Metro trains.

After successfully reducing the use of incandescent bulbs by shifting to CFL bulbs, the Union Power Ministry now plans to move to the next level by promoting LED bulbs to save power.

Shriram group to inject Rs 600 cr into Shriram EPC, subsidiaries

Chennai-based Shriram group will pump in around Rs 600 crore into Shriram EPC and its listed subsidiary, Orient Green Power Ltd. This was decided at a board meeting today, with the aim of restructuring the two companies.
