Agra set to be country’s first solar city

The state government on Friday announced that the Taj city would be the first ‘solar city’ of the country. Minister of state for alternative energy (independent charge) Vijay Mishra said that a Detailed Project Report(DPR) has been sent by the Agra authorities for making the city as the first Solar city of the country.

“The work on the project in Agra would start once the Centre approves the DPR. The solar system in Agra would save more than 10% of the power energy,” the minister said to a question of BSP member Dharampal Singh.

‘Climate change to hit crop yield’

There is going to be a major shift in crop pattern across the state and the yields of different agriculture and horticulture crops will be reduced owing to climate change over the years, according to agriculture scientists.

Scientists in the field of climate change met at the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, (UAS-B) on Thursday to discuss adaptive strategies to meet challenges of climate change.

India : 10,431 MW Renewable Energy capacity added during last 3 years against a target of 9623 MW

A capacity addition of 10,431 MW against a target of 9623 MW has been achieved from renewable energy sources during the last 3 years. The total installed capacity of power generation from renewable energy in the country is 26,920 MW. During 2012-13, a capacity addition of 2005.57 MW has been achieved till 31.01.2013 against the target of 4125 MW. State-wise targets for the power generation from renewables are not fixed. Odisha to set up a PSU to boost renewable energy generation

The Odisha government today said it has decided to set up a dedicated public sector company for the purpose of increasing generation of renewable energy, mostly hydro-power production capacity in the state.

“My government has decided to set up a dedicated Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) in the name of Green Energy Development Corporation to give focused attention in development of small hydro power potential of the state,” the Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik said here.

Hubli-Dharwad set to become solar cities

In a bid to tackle the perpetual power crisis, the government has decided to initiate the solar city project in Hubli. The government has already given its consent to sanction Rs 5 crore for the 'Solar City' project.

Under the 11th five year plan, the ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE) has decided to turn 60 cities into solar or green cities in the country. Hubli-Dharwad and Mysore are two cities chosen by the MNRE in the state.

Irregular payment drives away windmill investors

As Coimbatore makes its stand as one of the main wind energy sites in Tamil Nadu, irregular payment of arrears by the state has affected the windmill owners severely. Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram to get micro water treatment plants soon

The Kerala water authority (KWA) is planning to set up mirco water treatment plants (MWTP) in Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam as part of its plan to tackle the impending drought. The authority's plan involves getting drinking water from local water bodies, including quarries.

The Rs 42-lakh project envisages treatment and supply of water from small and medium water bodies in areas facing severe water shortage. Through a partnership with SolarCity, a residential and commercial installer, Honda and Acura will offer their customers home solar systems at little or no upfront cost, the companies said Tuesday. State to have country’s first offshore wind energy project

The country's first offshore wind energy project in Gujarat, increasing power generation capacity by over 3,600 mega watts (MW) and creating a special purpose vehicle (SPV) to develop the Mandal-Becharaji Special Investment Region (SIR), are among the provisions made for infrastructure and energy sectors in the state budget.

Finance Minister Nitin Patel presented the budget for 2013-14 in the Assembly Wednesday.

Chennai industries shift to solar power

Automobile industries situated in the Chennai suburbs are joining hands to combat power outages by shifting to solar power. In a major move, five auto component companies got together to set up a solar power either in Tuticorin or Sivaganga in Tamil Nadu.

Auto Parts, Super Auto Forge, The Rane group, MM Forgings and Natesan Industries have formed a consortium and decided to install a Rs 70 crore worth solar farm, with an installed capacity of 7 MW. TN solar power investors likely to commit to 190 MW

Investors are likely to commit to over 190 MW of solar power generation in Tamil Nadu in response to the bids called by the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation, according to sources.

In January the utility had called for bids from private players to set up over 1,000 MW solar power generation facilities to supply to the grid for 20 years.

Over 90 bidders accounting for about 500 MW of generation capacity responded with bids ranging from Rs 5.97 a unit to about Rs 18.

Greenpeace India has made a request to Bihar deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi, who also holds the finance portfolio, to prioritize renewable energy (RE) based electricity generation in the budget allocation for the financial year 2013-14.

Goa CM can't handle his e-waste

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar Tuesday said he does not know how to handle the e-waste he generates.

He added that after plastic, e-waste could be the biggest waste disposal problem in Goa.

"I have seven computers. Whenever I buy a new one, I dump the old one at my house. I do not know what to do with the old one," said the chief minister, who is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Mumbai.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation eyes Singapore 'water way'

To avoid the use of precious potable water for non-drinking purposes, the civic body plans to also provide treated but non-potable water to the city in the near future. A consultant will be appointed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to suggest steps to conserve drinking water.

The city today gets potable water from six lakes and it is also used for washing, cleaning, gardening and other non-drinking purposes.

Alpha Infra bids for 80 MW solar power in AP

Alpha InfraProp Private Ltd has bid for creating 80 MW of solar power, Lanco Solar Energy for about 60 MW in the latest round of tenders called for by the Andhra Pradesh Government.

A record 294 bids were submitted by 184 bidders with the total capacity installation of 1,350 MW. The State Government had, in the first phase, invited bids for setting up of 1,000 MW of solar power projects. The last date for bid submission was February 15.

Solar powered traffic signals project to start by March 15

The Noida Authority has finally decided to implement last year's proposal of making traffic signals across the city run on solar power. The decision of starting the project by March 15 was taken by Authority officials following a meeting with the traffic department on Monday. 

Noida already has about 36 traffic signals that run on solar power, but the Authority decided to convert the other 79 to solar powered signals. Producing CNG, even from bagasse, for vehicles!

It couldn't get more natural than this. Under instructions from the Union ministry for new and renewable energy (MNRE), Pune-based Automotive Research Association of India is expected to "test the bio-CNG produced from bagasse and its use in operating a commercial vehicle".

Incidentally, Hyderabad-based Spectrum Renewable Energy Private Ltd is expected to provide the bio-CNG and an engine of a commercial vehicle for detailed testing that will include testing of emission levels, engine performance under different conditions and other technical specifications.

Tata Power today said its 50.4 MW wind energy plant in Gujarat has been registered under the United Nations Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), making it the company's third project to be part of this framework.

Located in Samana, the project will come under Clean Development Mechanism of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Andhra Pradesh solar tender attracts bids worth 1,340 MW

Andhra Pradesh’s tender for the purchase of electricity generated by solar plants of 1,000 MW, has attracted bids worth 1,339.5 MW. As many as 294 bids have been submitted by 184 bidders, it is reliably learnt.

Alfa Infra Properties has put up bids for several projects with a total capacity of 80 MW, and has topped the list of bidders in terms of capacity. Bhubaneswar to switch to solar streetlights

The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday installed a solar streetlight on an experimental basis as part of Centre-sponsored solar city project.

The Department of Agri Marketing and Agri Business has proposed to introduce solar dryers for the benefit of chilli-growing farmers in Ramanathapuram district.

PE investors shift focus to renewable energy sector

In a reflection of investors’ aversion towards Indian power projects using conventional fuel such as coal and gas, no private-equity (PE) firm pledged investment in the space all through the last calendar year.

But the renewable energy sector that includes wind and solar power saw 12 PE deals valued at $325.1 million (about Rs.1,765.30 crore) in the 2012 calendar year, according to VCCEdge, an investment tracker.
