MC mulls over proposals to harness solar energy

The Municipal Corporation is mulling on proposals to harness solar energy. The proposal entails making use of solar energy in the buildings as well as for street lighting. A provision of Rs 1 crore has been made in the budget for the financial year 2013-14.

The proposal being mooted is that solar panels could be installed on the buildings of community centres that belong to the MC. Water shortage will not affect power generation

The worsening water scarcity situation in the state may not affect power supply and it is unlikely that there would be power disruptions during the peak summer months.

The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd on Tuesday said that though the shortage of water has stopped power generation at Parali power station and shortage of gas has affected power generation at the Ratnagiri power plant (Dabhol), there was no need to press the panic button. Vikram Solar to commission 40-MW Rajasthan plant

Aiming to set up solar power projects of 300 MW over next 3-5 years, leading solar product manufacturer Vikram Solar today said it will soon commission its 40-MW plant in Rajasthan.

The 40-MW solar power generating plant in Rajasthan is being set up with an investment of over Rs 400 crore under the government's National Solar Mission (NSM).

"It is in the process of completion. It will be commissioned in an another week's time," Vikram Solar Director Gyanesh Chaudhary told PTI.

Moser Baer net loss widens to Rs141.19 crore

Compact disk maker Moser Baer India Ltd (MBIL) standalone net loss has widened to Rs141.19 crore for the quarter ended December due to foreign exchange loss and subdued sale of high-margin products.

The New Delhi-based optical storage manufacturer had posted a net loss of Rs95.91 crore in the year-ago period.

“The loss widened mainly due to an exceptional unrealized loss of Rs19.3 crore, which pertains to short term exchange impact on account of long term foreign currency liabilities,” MBIL chief financial officer (CFO) Yogesh Mathur told PTI.

Mytrah Energy to install 300 MW wind farms in AP by next year-end

Mytrah Energy (India) Ltd plans to invest about Rs 2,000 crore in setting up 300 MW of wind power generation farms by the end of next year.

Listed on the Alternate Investment Market of London Stock Exchange, and based in Hyderabad, Mytrah Energy now has total installed capacity of 310 MW, including 63 MW in Vajrakarur in Anantapur district.

It invested Rs 400 crore for the Vajrakarur project. Another 37.4 MW is under construction in Kurnool and is expected to be commissioned by September.

NCC in talks for stake sale in Himachal hydel project

Construction and infrastructure company NCC Ltd has reportedly sold a part of the stake in the 100 MW hydro power project in Himachal Pradesh to an Abu Dhabi-based company.

When asked about this development, Y.D. Murthy, Executive Vice-President, Finance, NCC, said, “The company is in discussions with some investors and it is not possible to comment on such developments.”

NCC is seeking to sell some of the matured assets, such as road projects and hydel power plant investments, to trim its debt.

Tatas eye six-fold jump in green power capacity

Tata Power is eyeing an over six-fold increase in its clean energy capacity - wind, solar and hydro power - to 6,500 megawatt (MW) by 2020, a fourth of its projected total energy capacity of 26,000 MW.

The company, which has so far invested Rs. 2,400 crore, plans to invest Rs. 1,250 crore more to take its clean energy portfolio to 2,000 MW by 2013-14 from the current 852 MW.The Tata Group firm is banking on acquisitions, capacity addition and overseas expansion to achieve the target.

Widening domestic sourcing net may hurt India’s case

The US could have a stronger case against India at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) if the country goes ahead with its plans of covering more products under domestic sourcing norms in the second phase of the National Solar Mission.

In a response being framed on the draft rules for the second phase circulated by the Ministry of Non-renewable Energy recently, the Commerce Department has taken a view that inclusion of a larger number of items like thin films and solar cells under sourcing norms could spell trouble at the WTO, an official told Business Line.

Plastic to diesel

A sum of Rs. 25 lakh has been earmarked for converting plastic waste into diesel, provided the corporation receives matching grants from different sources. The diesel will be used to fuel the corporation’s vehicles.

In view of Mysore being developed into a Model Solar City for which the Centre has approved five projects worth Rs. 5.72 crore, the MCC intends to establish solar plants at Cheluvamba and Kuppanna parks.

Indian response to US charges on solar policy in 10 days

 India will respond within 10 days to WTO on US complaint that alleges discrimination by New Delhi's national solar mission against American products.

"...the US has sought a consultation in respect to domestic content policy of National Solar Mission. According to the laid-down procedure, India has to respond within 10 days. We have received the notice and will respond within the prescribed time period," Additional Secretary in the Commerce Ministry Rajeev Kher said in a statement.

Land acquisition for solar plants on

The process of land acquisition for setting up solar photovoltaic (SPV) power plants at seven un-electrified tribal habitations in the Bhadrachalam Agency has gained momentum.

The Andhra Pradesh Northern Power Distribution Company Limited (APNPDCL) has already initiated the tender process for installation, operation and maintenance of SPV plants in a total of 20 un-electrified tribal habitations in both Bhadrachalam and Palvancha divisions.

Delhi seeks to tap more solar power

With conventional sources of electricity likely to get scarcer and more expensive in the coming years, the Delhi government is weighing the option of generating more solar power in the near future.

"The Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) had issued an advisory to the government for generating solar power. We will soon hold deliberations on the project and we will decide how power companies can be roped in," an official told IANS.

Welspun Energy to Start 2 India Solar Projects Ahead of Schedule

Welspun Energy Ltd., India’s biggest developer of solar projects, will commission two plants in the state of Rajasthan by the end of next week, more than 10 days ahead of schedule.

The 15-megawatt and 20-megawatt projects in Jodhpur district were to start Feb. 26, Managing Director Vineet Mittal said in a phone interview yesterday from Mumbai.

Indian Curbs on Solar Imports Spark U.S. Complaint at WTO

The U.S. lodged a complaint at the World Trade Organization against India’s restrictions on imports of solar equipment, saying domestic-content requirements violate global commerce rules.

India compels solar-energy producers to use domestically manufactured solar cells and modules and gives subsidies to developers who use domestic equipment rather than imports, the U.S. Trade Representative’s office said today in an e-mailed statement from Washington. India’s January Demand for Clean-Energy Credits Declines 16%

Demand for Indian renewable-energy credits fell 16 percent in January from the previous month as the failure of regulators to enforce clean-energy targets prompted companies to abstain from trading.

Credits sold for 1,500 rupees ($28) each, the floor price set by the regulator, according to REConnect Energy Solutions Pvt., an Indore-based trader said. Demand for solar credits bucked the trend by climbing almost 20 times in the period.

Surana Ventures has floated a subsidiary for putting up a 5 MW solar power project. For the new subsidiary, Surana Solar System Pvt Ltd, the 5 MW project just taken up will be the first in a series of 5 MW-projects. Kerala plans 25,000-rooftop solar units programme

Even as it is getting ready to formally launch its ‘10,000 rooftop’ programme, Kerala is working on the next step—another programme to facilitate an additional 25,000 rooftop solar plants in the State.

But unlike the 10,000-rooftop programme, which is to be formally launched on February 11, the next one will be grid-connected.

Mizuho Leads Japanese Group to Build Solar-Power Plant in India

Mizuho Financial Group Inc. (8411) will lead a group of Japanese companies to build a solar plant in Gujarat as India targets an eightfold expansion in sun-powered capacity.

The facility will be able to generate as much as 200 megawatts and may cost as much as 30 billion yen ($325 million), Masako Shiono, a company spokeswoman, said today by telephone. Mizuho’s corporate lending unit signed a memorandum of understanding with Gujarat’s government in January, she said.

Tangedco to begin talks with potential solar power generators

The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation is set to start negotiations with potential solar power generators who have bid to enter into long term power purchase agreements with it.

The utility had called for bids from investors to establish over 1,000 MW of solar power generation capacity across the State.

Over 90 bidders had submitted bids to set up about 500 MW of solar power generation capacity. On January 30 Tangedco opened the price bids. The lowest tariff quoted was Rs 5.97 a unit.

Govt considering allowing SEZ units to recycle plastic waste

The government is considering allowing units in special economic zones (SEZs) to recycle plastic waste.

At present, the Commerce Ministry does not consider fresh proposals for such units as it is in the process of finalising a policy in this regard. It has also invited stakeholders comments for the same in the next 15 days.

The Ministry has drafted a policy which states that import of plastic waste/scrap shall be permitted only as per the approved capacity of the Letter of Approval issued to an SEZ unit.

Biomass-based power producers seek interest subvention

Biomass-based power producers have knocked on the doors of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy for lobbying with the Ministry of Finance for a 2 per cent interest subvention for the loans taken by them.

The Indian Biomass Power Association had approached the Ministry of Finance with this (among others) request. However, last month the Ministry wrote back to the Association noting that it had considered the Association’s requests in consultation with the Reserve Bank of India.
