TN to lead India's solar power revolution by 2015

Tamil Nadu would generate around 40 percent of the solar energy produced in the country by 2015, said Sudeep Jain, chairman and director of the Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA).

Jain was addressing an international workshop on renewable energy, climate change, energy management being held in the city on Thursday.

He said that solar power generation was set to surge as state was all set to complete its roof top solar revolution by 2015 as part of its solar energy policy and programme.

Shan Solar to develop solar park

Shan Solar, a Bangalore-based solar module manufacturer, plans to establish a 50 MW solar park near Hyderabad. Its Chairman and Managing Director Suryaprakash Singapur, and Chief Marketing Officer Rajesh Rangarajan told The Hindu on Tuesday that the company had identified 250 acres for the purpose. The total investment expected at the park was nearly Rs.500 crore.

Green buildings likely to get more FARs

Green buildings help you reduce the electricity bill, save water and make your living space comfortable but now there is another incentive. Following a recent announcement by the lieutenant governor, green structures in the capital may be allowed a larger floor area ratio (FAR) compared to conventional buildings.

FAR is the ratio of a building's total floor area to the size of the land on which it is built. In Delhi, it varies according to the size of the plot.

New waste disposal system in city from March 1

GVMC will introduce localised solid waste management in all the 72 wards of the city from March 1.

Announcing this at the inaugural of a national workshop on ‘Appropriate solid waste management options for small and medium towns in India’ here on Tuesday, Municipal Commissioner M.V. Satyanaryana said all through the month of February people would be educated on the new waste disposal method. Car that runs on air by PSA Peugeot Citroen soon

If you have ever grimaced at your never ending petrol bill and dreamed of a car that runs on fresh air, your prayers are about to be answered.

French car giant PSA Peugeot Citroen believes that it can put an air-powered car on the road by 2016, the Daily Mail reported.

Its scientists say it will knock 45 percent off fuel bills for an average motorist, and when driving in towns and cities costs could be slashed by as much as 80 percent because the car will be running on air for four-fifths of the time.

India, a country blessed with enormous reserves of renewable energy, pays up to 32 percent more for electricity from solar and wind than the U.S. or Europe because projects are so expensive to finance, according to a report.

Su-Kam installs India’s first solar street lighting project

Power solutions provider Su-Kam Power Systems has completed the installation for the Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency's (TEDA) centralized street light project scheme.

Su-Kam has installed centralized solar photo voltaic power plants of each 500W that will power a cluster of 10 existing lights from each photo voltaic plant, through the distribution network of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (Tangedco), with provision for grid backup.

L&T Infra may fund BLP’s acquisition of DLF wind power biz

L&T Infrastructure Finance Co. Ltd may fund Bharat Light and Power’s (BLP) acquisition of real estate developer DLF Ltd’s wind power business in a deal valued at a potential Rs.900 crore.

BLP is promoted by Tej Preet Chopra, former president and chief executive of GE India. JP Morgan Asia Pacific Equity Research said in a 13 January report that the wind power business could fetch Rs.1,000 crore for DLF.

Wind energy capacity addition to dip in financial year 2013

India will witness its weakest wind energy capacity addition in seven years , due to the double-whammy of high interest rates prevailing in financial year 2012-13, coupled with a rollback of incentives, sector players and experts said.

The country may be able to add only 1,500 MW of new wind energy capacity in the fiscal year 2012-13, missing the target of 2,500 MW set at the beginning of the year. Households not sorting waste before disposal; contractors doing a poor job

They were set up across several parts of the city with much fanfare in 2009 but the green and blue dustbins that were meant to facilitate waste segregation are being used like ordinary bins now.

Even at the household level, waste segregation is a failed initiative. Of Delhi's three municipal zones, one has issued a tender for waste collection and segregation as recently as last week. The other two corporations blame the project's failure on lack of cooperation from residents and underperformance by private concessionaires.

Ikea to Double Renewable Energy Investment to $4 Billion by 2015

Ikea Group, the world’s biggest furniture retailer, will double its investment in renewable energy to $4 billion by 2020 as part of a drive to reduce costs as cash-strapped consumers become more price sensitive.

Swelect Energy buys 49% in HHV Solar

Chennai-based Swelect Energy Systems Ltd has acquired 49 per cent equity in Bangalore-based HHV Solar Technologies Pvt Ltd for a consideration of Rs 22 crore, as part of its entry into the solar photo voltaic (SPV) modules business.

KSPCB chief inaugurates UNIDO project on medical waste management

To reduce Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) from biomedical waste, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has launched a project titled "Enviornmental sound management of medical waste" in five states including Karnataka.

Four years on, no headway in waste management project

There has been no headway in the solid waste management (SWM) project in the city despite availability of funds under the 12th Finance Commission. The Rourkela Municipality has received Rs 4 crore in the last four years.

Sun cities? Rajasthan solar projects under a cloud

For a state considered a frontrunner in the solar energy sector, Rajasthan is falling behind in the 'race for the sun'.

Its efforts to develop three solar cities in the state have been a damp squib even as cities in many other states have got their master plans approved by the Union ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE).

Govt. urge power companies to use renewable energy sources

The government is pushing power companies to start distributing a certain percentage of renewable energy, like solar power, from this financial year, but the discoms say they need more time and that solar power is likely to lead to higher power tariffs in the short run.

Proparco in talks to invest $10 million in RenewGen, a renewable energy firm

Global development finance institution Proparco is currently in discussions to invest $10 million (about Rs 54 crore) in RenewGen Enviro Ventures India, a Bangalore-based renewable energy firm.

The investment, which will be in the form of debt, follows the $9 million debt-and-equity investment made by International Finance Corp, the private investment arm of the World Bank, last May.
