Nissan to sell new lower-priced version of Leaf electric car

Nissan Motor Co will introduce a lower-priced version of its electric car, called the Leaf S, as it rolls out the 2013 models, the company said on Wednesday.

Pricing for the new versions of the Leaf, including two that have been sold for two years, has not yet been announced.

The 2013 Leaf is expected to be at dealerships in February, said Brian Brockman, Nissan spokesman.

Two versions of the Leaf will come with a standard 6.6-kilowatt onboard charger that will cut charging time in half compared with 2012 models, Nissan said.

Airtel reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 11% per terabyte

Bharti Airtel has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 11 per cent per terabyte in network infrastructure in 2011—12.
“The company has been constantly working along with its partners to reduce Green House Gas (GHG) emissions in its operations. The report discloses an 11 per cent reduction in GHG emissions per terabyte in network infrastructure in 2011—12,” Airtel’s sustainability report 2011—2012 said.

Solar power policy in 2 months

The state government on Thursday said it would put in place a comprehensive solar policy within two months to promote effective use of the renewable source of energy.

Secretary, science and technology, D N Gupta said the policy is expected to be ready within two months. "We are also going to come up with a 'Vision-2020' document for the renewable energy sector. In the next one year, solar power production in the state is targeted to reach 50 MW while we hope to scale it up to 80 MW in the next three years," said Gupta, following a meeting with chief secretary B K Patnaik.

Green Infra Seeking $150 Million for Wind Farms, Considers IPO

Green Infra Ltd., an Indian wind-farm developer backed by IDFC Private Equity, is in talks with at least two investors to raise $150 million.

The funds raised will be used to increase generation capacity to 1 gigawatt from 295 megawatts in two years, Chief Executive Officer Shivanand Nimbargi said in a phone interview from New Delhi. The company may consider an initial public offering in 2015, he said.

Tamil Nadu solar bid faces legal heat

Tamil Nadu's recent bid to build 1 gigawatts of solar capacity, through the single-biggest tender in India till date, is facing a legal challenge from the Indian arm of the non-profit global solar advisory International Solar Energy Society.

The arm, Solar Energy Society of India (Sesi), having 2,500 members made up of manufacturers, consultants, academics and government officials, has in a writ petition filed with the Madras High Court sought the quashing of the tender because guidelines for competitive bidding aren't in place.

PM unveils plan to promote electric, hybrid vehicles

Prime minister Manmohan Singh unveiled the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan 2020 on Wednesday. He said it will promote a cleaner transportation system for the future.

The plan had been announced in the 2011 Budget. It aims to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. India will spend at least Rs.22,500 crore in the next eight years to promote electric and hybrid vehicles, of which the government will provide Rs.13,000-14,000 crore, and the remaining amount will be invested by the auto industry in research and development.

Gujarat govt ropes in Mumbai firm for 1,000 MW canal-based solar power project

Gujarat government has roped in a Mumbai-based company to tap the maximum potential of canal-based solar power generation. The company aims to save on the cost of land for laying solar panels, while simultaneously preventing water evaporation and theft.

Gujarat to promote solar power under REC mechanism

Apex state power utility Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) is going to ink power purchase agreements with solar project developers under renewable energy certificate mechanism soon. The process for the same will start from next month. Independent power producer Green Infra and German company juwi India have commissioned a 15 MW solar plant Vill Bap Tehsil Phalodi, in Jodhpur district, Rajasthan.

Green Infra, incubated by IDFC Private Equity, is setting up a total of 25 MW in Phalodi, across two plants as part of its contracts signed with juwi India for 5 MW under Green Infra Solar Projects Limited and 20 MW under Green Infra Solar Farms Ltd.

Mahindra EPC, PR Fonroche to set up two solar plants in Raj

Mahindra Group firm Mahindra EPC and PR Fonroche have joined hands for setting up two solar power plants of total capacity 20 MW at Bikaner in Rajasthan.

"PR Fonroche, a joint-venture between PR Clean Energy (India) and Fonroche Energie (France), has collaborated with Mahindra EPC, a part of Mahindra Group, to commission two solar photo voltaic based power plants in Bikaner, Rajasthan," the two companies said in a joint statement.

Welspun Energy to sign MoUs with GEDA

Welspun Energy Ltd today informed that the company would sign memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with Gujarat Energy Development Authority (GEDA) for 200 megawatts of renewable energy certificates (RECs). The MoUs are valued at around Rs 1200 crore.

Price of solar panels crashes, domestic solar equipment manufacturers face a hard time

Domestic solar equipment manufacturers are facing a hard time with the price of solar panels crashing in the global market coupled with sluggish demand in India. Most of them have either shut down their operations or have scaled down to 15-30% of their capacity.

India has 1,100 mw of solar power capacity installed in last two years. Gujarat alone boasts of close to 750 mw of solar power projects.

EU Carbon Permits Drop as Natural Gas, Power Prices Decline

European Union carbon allowances fell as German electricity and U.K. natural gas prices dropped, curbing demand for pollution rights in the world’s biggest cap- and-trade system.

EU permits for delivery in December declined as much as 4.2 percent to 6.38 euros ($8.34) a metric ton on London’s ICE Futures Europe exchange in London. The contract closed 2.9 percent down at 6.47 euros.

TN solar bid ‘seriously flawed’

The Tamil Nadu solar bid is “seriously flawed”, says the Solar Independent Power Producers Association (SIPPA).

In a petition sent just days before the last date for submission of bids (January 4), the Association requested the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission to “instruct” the Tamil Nadu’s state-owned electricity generation and distribution company, Tangedco, “to conduct a transparent and fair bidding process.”
