Industries to lose Rs 1,000 crore every year in green drive

 The exclusion of the aspect of carbon credits by the government in its Perform Achieve and Trade (PAT) scheme will account for an annual loss of Rs 1000 Crore to industrialists. This estimate was drawn up by a faculty of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A), Amit Garg. Professor Garg is also one of the contributors to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)'s work which got Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

India Protests to Prevent UN Stopping Supply of HFC-23 Carbon Credits

 India, the world’s second-most populous nation, lodged a formal complaint to prevent the United Nations emissions market regulator from stopping issuances of credits derived from projects that cut hydrofluorocarbon-23 gas.

“India considers such steps to be violative of the rights and obligations of parties under the Kyoto Protocol and has lodged formal protest with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Secretariat” in Bonn, according to a statement from Environment Minister Shrimati Jayanthi Natarajan.

Global warming to gift malaria to State

 Karnataka along with Maharashtra and Kerala will become endemic malaria states by 2050, due to climate change, says a study.

Various effects of climate changes, including drop in food production and submergence of coastal cities, have long been predicted by scientists across the globe. Now, scientists say that climate change can possibly affect transmission of malaria in areas that were relatively less prone to it previously.

Agri institutions team up as climate threat turns real

 Climate change and its adverse effects on Indian agriculture are now a reality. These effects take the form of drought, frost, flooding, increases in temperature and fewer but intense rainy days, and are being studied by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and other institutions in 100 selected districts across the country.

One of those districts, Nalgonda in Andhra Pradesh, was found to have turned 'arid' from 'semi-arid' over the last thirty years.

 Before the turn of the century no less than 56 per cent of India's forests will be transformed under global warming, and among the most vulnerable will be the Western Ghats, says a new study published in the latest edition of Current Science.

Pak moves international court to stall J&K power project

Pakistan has filed a petition in the Court of Arbitration (CoA), The Hague, seeking an order to ask India to put on hold construction on the Kishenganga project till the final decision of the court.Constructed by the National Hydel Power Corporation at Gurez, close to the LoC, the 330MW hydroelectric project has been dogged in controversies. Pakistan wanted it should not come up, the militancy added to the indecision of the authorities in Jammu and Kashmir. The Rs3642.04 crore project is scheduled to be completed by 2015.

2609 highly polluting industrial units identified: Natarajan

The Central Pollution Control Board has identified 2609 highly polluting industrial units across the country, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Tuesday.

These units fall under 17 major categories of highly polluting industries in the country, Environment Minister Jayanthi Natarajan said in a written reply.

"The CPCB under its Environmental Surveillance Scheme (ESS) is carrying out random inspection of units for verification of compliance of stipulated environmental standards. Based on such inspections, action is taken against the default22222ing industries," she said.

'Indian firms lax in corporate responsibility'

Most Indian companies give out information on corporate responsibility as a part of their annual reports but very few of them take it seriously, says a survey by consulting firm KPMG. Only 16% of India's top 100 listed firms have a corporate responsibility (CR) strategy with well defined objectives and targets in place, says the survey.

"Some of the companies who have the best CR reporting strategy include ITC, NTPC, ONGC, Taj Group, Infosys, Ultratech cement, Tata Motors, SAIL, Larsen & Toubro, Dr Reddy Labs and Reliance Industries," the survey said.

Nordic carbon fund buys 4.6 million U.N. CO2 credits

The Nordic Environment Finance Corporation Carbon Fund (NeCF) has closed deals to buy 4.6 million U.N.-backed carbon credits from 10 clean energy projects in India and southeast Asia, it said on Tuesday.

"We are closing a large number of projects with a view to meeting the 12/12 registration deadline for EU ETS (emissions trading scheme) eligibility from projects not located in the least developed countries," said Ash Sharma, NEFCO vice president and head of carbon finance and funds unit, in a statement.

IBM India does its bit for the Ganga

 Given the tonnes of sewage and filth that have accumulated in the Ganga over the years, this may seem to be a drop in the ocean. India next big destination for solar energy

India is turning into the next big destination for solar energy, with demand for solar systems rising in the developing world, including China.  The move to cleaner energy got a further fillip on Wednesday, when India and Germany signed an agreement to set up one of the world's biggest solar energy station in Dhule district of Maharashtra.

For this, the German government owned development bank KfW has approved a loan of Rs 1,600 crore for a 125 MW solar power station. The total cost of the project would be Rs 2,370 crore.

Defence focused electronics company Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) is expanding its non-defence or civilian businesses. The PSU major, which is the leading supplier of radar, communication and electronic warfare equipments to the armed forces, is foraying into areas like tablet PCs and solar energy.

India to top U.S. lending with $575 million in solar deals

The U.S. Export-Import Bank expects India to become its biggest recipient of funding next year, led by loans for clean-energy projects including $575 million of solar deals.

The Export-Import Bank’s lending plans won’t be affected by concern that the renewable energy industry may be vulnerable to a new global recession, said Craig S. O’Connor, director of the bank’s office of renewable energy.

“This sector isn’t risky,” O’Connor said in an interview at a conference in New Delhi. “It’ll continue to grow.”

Sanitation to soon get privatized, consultant roped in to prepare report

Dissatisfied with the levels of sanitation maintained in the city, the Noida Authority has now proposed to privatize the civic service. Hoping to make overflowing dhalaos, garbage strewn on the roads and indiscriminate littering a thing of the past, the Authority is preparing a detailed report on possible models to keep the city "impeccably clean".

Smart toilets may prove a boon for school girls

Mid-day meals and cash incentives aside, a basic unfulfilled need – of toilets – is a key reason for girls dropping out of schools in India.

According to the Annual Status of Education Report, 2009, only 50 per cent Government and private schools in 575 out of 583 districts in India have toilets. Four out of 10 Government schools do not have separate toilets for girls and even where there are, 12-15 per cent are locked and only 30-40 per cent are “usable”.
