Indian Court Seeks Pollution Information at Sterlite Plant

 India’s top court today sought information about effluents from Sterlite Industries (India) Ltd.’s copper smelter, which faces charges of violating environmental rules.

The Tamil Nadu pollution control board has to file an application specifying the polluting materials and suggest steps to control pollution in and around the factory, a two-judge bench headed by R.V. Raveendran said in an interim order in New Delhi. India aims at over 50,000 MW of nuclear power by 2030

India plans to import light water reactors from Russia, the US and France to boost its nuclear energy genating capacity to 50,000-60,000 MW by 2030, former Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) chairman M.R. Srinivasan has said.

Germany's SMA Solar eyes 3,500MW worth business from India

Germany's SMA Solar, the world's largest maker of solar inverters, expects its Indian unit to get business worth 3,500 megawatt in Asia's third-largest economy in three years, a local unit official said.

"We are going with the pace of the Indian industry...but our objective is to be in leadership position in India as we are globally," Rakesh Khanna, general manager of SMA Solar India, said on Thursday.

India Revamps Solar Auction Rules; First Solar May Benefit

India revamped the rules for its second national auction of permits to build solar power plants, which could boost sales for equipment providers including First Solar Inc. (FSLR) and allow banks to lend more easily to the industry.

The government invited companies to register starting today for the auction that will award licenses to build as much as 350 megawatts of solar photovoltaic plants by 2013. New rules include changes that increase the size and amount of projects companies can win.

Plywood units: HC notice to forest dept

 The Kerala High Court directed issuing of notice to the Forest Department on a public interest litigation (PIL) challenging the mass awarding of No Objection Certificates for plywood manufacturing units at Perumbavoor, Kothamangalam, and Muvattupuzha regions. 

The PIL filed by NU John obstructs the mass approval of NOCs on the basis that plywood industries are causing ecological damage and would cause deforestation owing to its proximity to forests in Idukki and are polluting water streams and sources.

‘Rural electrification can only come from renewable sources’

 India cannot talk about greatness when the country has a 95% import dependence on oil and 40-45% import dependence on coal, said Deepak Gupta, secretary of the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, adding “this means a small country like Libya can control us”.

'We need to adopt energy efficient technologies'

PUNE: The Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bureau for Energy Efficiency (BEE) for creation of a shelf of energy efficient technologies for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) clusters.

The MoU also provides that the two organizations will create awareness and capacity building of local Business Development Services (BDS) providers for implementing energy efficient technologies.

German solar inverter to set up manufacturing base in India

 REFUsol GmbH, a manufacturer of solar inverters, will start local production of its products from the end of this year and first deliveries by early 2012. This manufacturing facility will be located in Pune, where it has already set up a customer support office.

IIMA to launch Rs 100 cr fund for sustainable energy on Thursday

 The Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIMA) will launch the Indian Fund for Sustainable Energy (INFUSE) with an estimated fund size of Rs 100 crores in collaboration with the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Technology Development Board (TDB) and British Petroleum(BP).

Audits aim to save energy in govt buildings

New Nepal energy rule to shake up Indian investors

 A new power regulation by Nepal that came into effect from Monday will now reshuffle over 70 hydropower projects capable of generating nearly 20,000 MW and galvanise Indian investors.

Nepal's new Energy Minister Gokarna Bista Monday unveiled the new power policy of the caretaker government that has ended the provision of awarding hydropower projects to developers on a first-come, first-served basis.

Volkswagen will within two weeks unveil one of the first single-seater cars, with the potential for zero emissions, the Financial Times reported on Monday.

SunBorne Energy to provide funds for Gujarat solar plant

SunBorne Energy has tied up funds to the tune of Rs 140 crore from domestic banks for its 15 megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic plant in Gujarat. The total project cost is estimated in the range of Rs 200-240 crore.

Indian Government to Open Bidding for 350 Megawatts in Photovoltaic Projects

India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is set to open bidding for 350 megawatts (MW) in solar photovoltaic (PV) projects, under the second tranche of the National Solar Mission, Phase-I. "All necessary procedures have been completed and the requests for proposals (RFPs) for the projects will be issued within next 10 days," said an MNRE-official on Friday.

Electric vehicles have long way to go in India

A study on the prospects of Electric Vehicles conducted by Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Ltd has estimated the current potential of the Indian market at 4% of the annual car sales in the country (or about 100,000 vehicles). The study finds that the Indian customer does not want to pay a premium for an electric vehicle.
