Government to prepare a national bio-energy mission to boost power generation from biomass

 The government is preparing a national bio-energy mission to boost power generation from biomass, a renewable energy source abundantly available in India. 

The mission, to be launched during the 12th Five-Year Plan, will offer a policy and regulatory environment to facilitate large-scale capital investments in biomass-fired power stations, Minister of New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah said. It will also encourage development of rural enterprises.

CII joins hands with BEE for enhancing energy conservation

 he Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has joined hands with Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) to enhance competitiveness through energy efficiency of industries.

Study on environmental damage in India

NTPC’s hydel foray: Siang project is a bold move but calibrated execution needed

 Reports say that NTPC, India's largest power producer, plans a massive 10,000 mw hydel project in Upper Siang district, Arunachal Pradesh. Given that hydroelectricity is renewable energy, and further that the thermal to hydro mix has declined and fallen in recent years, the proposal to build an ultra-mega hydel project is to be cautiously welcomed, given the pitfalls and risks involved in planning so large a project in a remote border region. Tentative estimates suggest that the project would cost Rs 1,00,000 crore, and project implementation would stretch to a decade.

India plans to develop solar-powered UAVs

India is planning to develop solar-powered unmanned flying machines with the capability of remaining airborne for at least a month in all weather conditions.

"We are looking forward to develop solar-powered unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with a long range and endurance capability as we plan to diversify our expertise in UAV technology," DRDO spokesperson Ravi Gupta told PTI here.

The one-of-its-kind UAV will be designed and developed to endure long-range sorties ranging up to a month in all weather conditions, Gupta said.

Central govt to provide power to every household by 2012

Despite an ambitious rural electrification programme, some 400 million Indians lose electricity access during blackouts. While 80 per cent Indian villages have at least one electricity line, only 44 per cent of rural households have access to electricity.

Delta Electronics to invest $15 mn in Solar Plant in Chennai

 The $ 6.6-billion, Taiwan-based Delta Electronics is investing $15 million to set up a manufacturing facility for solar inverters at the SIPCOT Sriperumbudur Hi-Tech SEZ, near Chennai. The plant is expected to be operational by mid-2012. Close to 70 per cent of the output will be exported, while the balance will meet the rising demand for solar inverters in India. India to explore possibilities in geothermal energy

Schneider Electric India bags Rs 110 crore orders

 Schneider Electric India has bagged orders worth Rs 110 crore to supply turnkey solutions for three photovoltaic solar power plants in India. The three photovoltaic solar power plants have a combined capacity of 22.3-mw, the company said in a statement. 

The orders comprise of two 5-mw photovoltaic solar power plants and one 12.3-mw photovoltaic solar power plant. On completion by end of December this year, the plants will have annual generating capacity of up to 35 gigawatt-hours of electricity.

While the district health administration has set eyes on curbing kala-azar cases, the Varanasi Nagar Nigam is still struggling to dispose of municipal waste. There is a huge backlog of unattended solid waste everywhere in the city that is raising the risk of vector-borne diseases.

Centre for Nuclear Energy in Haryana

The Global Centre for Nuclear Energy Partnership will be set up in Haryana, Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office V. Narayansamy said Thursday.
 
Land for this purpose has been identified and payment has been made to the Haryana government, the minister told the Rajya Sabha in a statement.

He added that India had signed cooperation agreements on Global Centre for Nuclear Energy Partnership with France, Russia and the US.

Annual CO2 emission can be reduced by 35%, says Govt

The government today said that annual carbon emission in the country could be reduced by up to 35% even while sustaining a 8-9% economic growth over the next decade.

In a written reply to Lok Sabha, Ashwani Kumar, Minister of State for Planning, Science & Technology and Earth Sciences said that an expert group constituted by the Planning Commission for drawing up a 'Low Carbon Strategy for Inclusive Growth' has submitted its interim report in May.

$200-mn ADB loan for Madhya Pradesh power projects

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) Wednesday offered a $200 million concessional loan to India to help improve electricity distribution in rural areas of Madhya Pradesh.

This is the first tranche of a $400 million loan approved under the Madhya Pradesh energy efficiency improvement investment programme.

Suzlon Energy bags 48.3 MW project from Indian Oil`

Suzlon Energy Limited (SEL) Wednesday said it has bagged a second order from the Indian Oil Corporation Limited to set up, operate and maintain wind energy projects of 48.3 MW in Andhra Pradesh.

'The order comprises of 23 units of Suzlon's wind turbines, and the power generated will be sold to the local power utility,' the company said in a regulatory filing. 

Suzlon had earlier bagged a 21 megawatt wind power project in the Kutch district of Gujarat in 2009.

Solar parks to get high priority: Farooq Abdullah

The government plans to accord high priority to developing large "solar parks", or clusters of units that can generate a total of up to 5,000 megawatts, to help cut costs, Renewable Energy Minister Farooq Abdullah said on Wednesday.
