Nalco keen to set up three hydro power projects in state

 As part of its plan to diversify into the energy business, National Aluminium Company (Nalco) has proposed to set up three hydro power projects with a combined capacity of 645 MW in locations identified by the state water resources department.

Nalco wishes to execute these hydel projects either independently or through joint venture with the state owned Orissa Hydro Power Corporation (OHPC). The aluminium major has evinced its interest to foray into the renewable energy sector in a recent proposal submitted to the state government.

Suzlon Energy Plans to Invest $1.4 Billion in South Australian Wind Farm

 Suzlon Energy Ltd. (SUEL), the Indian company that is Asia’s third-largest maker of wind turbines, plans to develop a A$1.3 billion ($1.4 billion) wind farm in South Australia, according to the state government.

The 600-megawatt project would produce enough electricity to power more than 200,000 homes a year, Mike Rann, premier of the Australian state, said today in a statement on his website. Suzlon expects to complete the 180-turbine wind farm on the Yorke Peninsula by the end of 2015, he said.

 Fertiliser major IFFCO’s Paradip unit in Orissa has won two prestigious awards for “Excellence in Energy Conservation” and “Corporate Social Responsibility’’.

“Excellent Energy Efficient Unit” award under ’National Energy Management Award-2011’ was presented at a function organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Hyderabad, IFFCO sources said here today.

Government plans to step up indigenous production of rare earth minerals

 India is planning to step up indigenous production of rare earth minerals, a bit of which can be found in everything high tech - from smart phones and laptops to hybrid vehicles and wind turbines. 

A government panel is currently working on a strategy paper to give impetus to exploration and discovery of rare earth and energy critical elements used in renewable energy, officials from the mines ministry told ET. The paper could lead to a policy on such minerals. India does not have a policy on rare earth minerals so far.

EIB lends €200m to ICICI bank for renewable projects in India

 The European Investment Bank (EIB) has awarded a €200m loan to the ICICI Bank of India for projects in the renewable energy sector.

It will take the form of a framework loan aimed at funding multiple developments in the cleantech sector with a particular focus on creating photovoltaic, biomass and onshore wind facilities.

Pune can't hold 1 crore people, says Assocham

  The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) on Tuesday cautioned that infrastructure in Pune would be inadequate to bear the projected population of about 1 crore by 2030 as compared to 49.5 lakh at present.

It has suggested introduction of a mass transportation system to decongest roads and cope with rapid urbanisation in and around the city.

 Even as the city is gearing up to celebrate Ganesh Chathurthi, environmentalists and green activist are worried about the pollution of water bodies due to the immersion of Ganesha idols. The Pollution Control Board and Coimbatore district administration have already issued instructions to the devotees to ensure minimum water pollution of the waterbodies in and around the city.

Court Said to Defer Agency Order on Coal India’s Jharkhand Mines

 A court deferred until Sept. 20 an environmental agency’s order to close 22 of Coal India Ltd. (COAL)’s mines in the eastern state of Jharkhand, three people with direct knowledge of the matter said.

The Jharkhand High Court in Ranchi asked Coal India, the world’s biggest producer of the fuel, to file a rejoinder to arguments filed by the Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board, said the people, who aren’t authorized to speak to the media.   Pure Air Lover's Society (PALS), a corporate social responsibility initiative of Suzlon, has announced a 'Gaadi Bandh' campaign at traffic signals in the city in an attempt to cut down on pollution from vehicles.

Reliance Power plans to invest Rs 8,000 crore to set up 500 MW solar power projects in Rajasthan

 Reliance Power plans to invest Rs 8,000 crore to set up 500 MW solar power projects in Rajasthan over the next three years, sources close to the development said. 

The planned investment is the largest investment in solar projects in India and one of the largest in the world. The first phase of the project comprises setting up a 40 MW plant by 2012, for which the US Exim Bank has approved a loan for $84 million, and a 100 MW project in the following year. The rate of interest rate for the loan is 4-5% and the tenure would be 17 years.

SMA Solar May Set Up Manufacturing Plant for Inverters in Asia

 SMA Solar Technology AG (S92), Germany’s biggest solar company by market value, is considering setting up a manufacturing base in Asia closer to a growing market for its solar inverters.

“We know that just operating out of Germany may not be the only way of doing business,” said Rakesh Khanna, head of the company’s India unit. “We’re reviewing it from an Asia-Pacific perspective, and India is one of the preferred locations.”

India to receive 200 bn euro loan from EU

India will receive a loan of 200 million euros from the European Union to finance private sector projects for the development of renewable energy resources. 

The EU's assistance comes as part of its "strategic partnership" with India and will be made available by the European Investment Bank (EIB) to ICICI Bank, India's largest private bank, in the first-ever cooperation between the two financial institutions.

  The world market for wind energy saw a sound revival in the first half of 2011 and re-gained momentum after a weak year in 2010. According to the estimates by the World Wind Energy Association (WWEA), the worldwide wind capacity reached 215000 MW by the end of June 2011, out of which 18,405 MW were added in the first six months of 2011.

Indians prefer eco-friendly products: Nielsen

 While shopping, a majority of Indians prefer to make decisions based on the impact of their purchases on environment and sustainability, according to a survey by the Nielsen Company.

"The Indian consumer is increasingly conscious of the benefits of environmentally friendly and sustainable practices... 86% Indian consumers surveyed, place faith in energy efficient products and appliances, followed by recyclable packaging (79%)," Global Online Environment and Sustainability Survey by Nielsen said.

'By 2025, city will generate 3,500 tonne waste a day'

By 2025, solid waste generated in the city will touch the 3,500-tonne-per-day mark, approximately, according to a research published in an international journal this month. Researchers at the Mumbai-based S K Somaiya College have estimated this, along with quantifying solid waste generated in Pune, calculating it at 2,602.17 tonne per day. The research said households produce 76.28% of the total solid waste, followed by restaurants (16.72%), shops and commercial units (3.50%), hotels (2.47%), theatres (0.69%) and hospitals (0.33%).

Tata BP Solar India Ltd, a joint venture of Tata Power and BP Solar, was today iommissioned under the rooftop and other Small Solar Power Generation Plant scheme, administered by IREDA under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM).

Solar energy yet to take off in Bihar

 Power-starved Bihar is yet to take off in solar energy. Although, of late, the Bihar government is serious about solar energy as an alternative source of energy. Less than a percent of the total population has an access to solar power.

Observing that India might face severe energy crunch in the future, a top official has said serious steps should be taken to ensure end-use energy efficiency.

'We are heading towards a situation where we can face severe net energy deficiency as well as sky-rocketing prices.
