New proposal aims to put more green shackles on developing economies

  The meeting was meant to review the work done two decades after the famed Rio summit or the UN meet on Environment and Development at Rio de Janeiro in 1992. But the Rio+20 conference is turning into another global ground to put green fetters on developing economies.

Grants for educational institutions to use renewable energy

 The Central Government is now offering grants to educational institutions that adopt renewable energy to meet their power requirements. The grants would meet nearly half of the project cost. Several institutions in southern districts of Tamil Nadu have already begun installation of power plants to join the project.

The project is being implemented in the State through Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA).

Renewable energy certificate prices hit a new high; volumes up 50%

 Rising buyer interest has driven up renewable energy certificate (REC) prices by about 16 per cent to a new high of Rs 1,800 a unit (Rs 1,555 a unit) in the latest trade on Friday.

The bids to buy RECs crossed the one-lakh mark for the first time since the trading began in February this year. The buy bids were at 1,45,204 against 81,493 in the previous trade in July. Similarly, the number of bids offered by sellers also inched up further to 49,897 as against 34,976 in the previous trade.

Sunny days may not be ahead for all solar power cos in Gujarat

 Not all the companies, which are busy setting up their solar power projects in Gujarat, would be able to make hay when the sun shines. Many of them may not be able to avail Rs 15 per unit procurement tariff fixed by Gujarat government as the tariff is applicable to those units that get commissioned before December 2011.

NMC readies for 24x7 water supply scheme

The final process to implement 24x7 water supply scheme in the city has commenced. Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has transferred 427 staffers of water works department (WWD) on deputation to its special purpose vehicle - Nagpur Environmental Services Limited (NESL) - which started functioning from September 1.

The focus is back on the Chennai Corporation's integrated solid waste management project at the Perungudi dumping yard as the National Green Tribunal will be hearing a petition challenging the project on October 18. India will require 345 mn tonne foodgrains by 2030: Rawat

  India will need 345 million tonne of foodgrains, including 95-100 million tonne wheat, by 2030, Minister of State for Agriculture Harish Rawat said today.

"India would require to produce about 95-100 million tonnes of wheat to reach the target of 345 million tonnes of foodgrains by 2030," Rawat said in his inaugural speech at an ICAR function here.

Helped by good monsoon, the country produced 241.56 million tonne of foodgrains in 2010-11, of which wheat''s share was 85.93 million tonnes, according to the latest estimate of the agriculture ministry.

Reliance Power gets Rs 400 crore US Exim Bank funding for solar plant

 Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group firm RPower has got a Rs 400 crore loan from the US Emport-Import Bank for a 40-MW solar plant being set up in Rajasthan. 

The company is developing the country's largest solar photo voltaic (PV) project with 40-MW generation capacity, which is scheduled for commissioning by March, 2012. 

When contacted, a Reliance Power Spokesperson confirmed the sanction of the loan by the US Exim Bank, adding that the company was "fully committed to develop a large renewable energy portfolio comprising wind, solar PV and solar thermal projects."

PMO steps in to put growth on track, reviews working of nine ministries

Indian Subsidies to Clean Energy Rise 63% to 2.36 Billion Rupees

 Indian central government subsidies for clean-energy projects rose 63 percent to 2.36 billion rupees ($51 million) in the financial year ended March 31.

The assistance included favorable interest rates on loans and higher rates paid to wind farms and other projects for the clean power they generated, Minister of New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah said in a written response to parliament today.

The government has provided 1 billion rupees in subsidies so far this financial year, he said.

UP to get 11 new hydro power projects

 Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) has invited bids from private companies or consortiums for setting up small hydro power projects in the state. The proposed plants numbering 11 with tentative installed capacity of over 11,000 Kilowatt (Kw) are to be developed in Meerut, Jhansi, Jalaun, Banda, Pilibhit and Varanasi districts.

Air pollution more harmful to poor; makes them vulnerable

 It is not only the rising food inflation rate that tags the government as anti-poor but inaction in implementing policies to reduce amount of harmful pollutants in the air people breathe.

ADB to extend $500 million to Indian Railways

 The Asian Development Bank (ADB) would extend loans of up to $500 million to Indian Railways to help improve its services along some of the busiest freight and passenger transport routes.

Organizers of the London 2012 Olympic Games dropped a plan to cut carbon emissions during the sporting showcase, abandoning a pledge made when it defeated eight other cities to host the event.

A fund to help channel $100 billion in climate-change aid annually to developing nations should encourage private financing instead of counting mostly on money from cash-strapped industrialized countries, Bloomberg New Energy Finance said.

Auto parts makers seek tech fund

  Automotive component manufacturers have sought the setting up of a technology upgrade fund of Rs 7.500 crore, which would enable them to invest in new technology. 

Automotive Component Manufacturers Association (ACMA) president Srivats Ram said the industry needs to put emphasis on new product development, process improvements, modernisation of manufacturing technologies with focus on energy efficiency and environment. The industry would need a corpus of Rs 7,500 crore to be spent over a 5-year period as soft loans.

UK Minister says India should move from coal to natural gas

 British minister of state for foreign and commonwealth affairs Lord David Howell suggested that like some European countries, India too should move from coal to natural gas to reduce greenhouse emissions.
