TTK Prestige taps water purifier biz

 Aiming to become a total kitchen solutions brand, Bangalore-based TTK Prestige has entered into the water purifier category in partnership with Swiss firm Lifestraw SA.

TTK Prestige said it will use its existing distribution network besides own retail chain, Prestige Smart Kitchens, to penetrate into the category largely dominated by direct sales.

“Water purifier is a highly under-penetrated category. We wanted to enter as it will give us a total portfolio in the kitchen space,” said Chandru Kalro, CEO of TTK Prestige.

Japan, ADB Announce Fund to Promote Low-Carbon Technologies in Asia

 The Asian Development Bank (ADB) announced today the establishment of a new trust fund to support the adoption of advanced low-carbon technologies in its developing member countries (DMCs), with a grant of 1.8 billion (about $17.65 million) from the Government of Japan.

The Minister of the Environment of Japan Nobuteru Ishihara and ADB President Takehiko Nakao signed a Letter of Intent for Cooperation on Environmental Issues, which will include cooperation for effective implementation of the Japan Fund for the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JFJCM).

Doctors lack tools to discuss toxic exposures with pregnant patients: survey

Obstetricians recognize that exposure to chemicals and metals can affect a pregnancy, but said in a new survey that they face barriers to counseling patients about environmental hazards.

The first of its kind study found that U.S. obstetricians and gynecologists feel they lack the medical education and training, evidence-based guidelines and tools for communicating potential environmental risks to patients.

“The main barrier is something the doctors in our focus groups called ‘Pandora's Box’,” Dr. Naomi Stotland, who led the study, told Reuters Health in an email.

Now, 'cheap' water-based organic battery that's eco-friendly too

 Researchers have developed a water-based organic battery that is long lasting, built from cheap, eco-friendly components. 

The new battery - which uses no metals or toxic materials - is intended for use in power plants, where it can make the energy grid more resilient and efficient by creating a large-scale means to store energy for use as needed.

 Climate Parliament, global network of legislators working to combat climate change has initiated Karnataka speaker and MLAs to constitute a standing committee on energy and power. Dinesh Gundu Rao, minister of food and civil supplies, who is also the chairperson of Climate Parliament Karnataka chapter along with 10 other MLAs requested the speaker of the assembly Kodagu Thimappa to begin the process of forming this committee on Tuesday.

India's Energy Import Bill Could Shoot Up To $230B By 2023, Up From Current

Welspun Renewables Energy gets another investment from ADB

Business Styandard reported that within 2 months of General Electric's USD 24 million investment in Welspun Renewables Energy’s 151 MW solar project at Neemuch in Madhya Pradesh, the Asian Development Bank has invested part of a USD 50 million committed equity capital in the renewable energy unit of the Welspun Group.

Welspun Renewables Energy, which has interest in solar and wind power projects, plans to add at least 200 MW of solar power projects and 100 MW of wind power projects by March 2016.

 Together with the UK government, the West Bengal department of power and Kolkata Municipal Corporation are working on developing a grid-connected rooftop solar system.

Climate policies could lift global GDP by $2.6 trillion/year

 Global economic output could rise by as much as an additional $2.6 trillion a year, or 2.2 percent, by 2030 if government policies improve energy efficiency, waste management and public transport, according to a World Bank report released on Tuesday.

The report, produced with philanthropic group ClimateWorks Foundation, analysed the benefits of ambitious policies to cut emissions from transport, industrial and building sectors as well as from waste and cooking fuels in Brazil, China, India, Mexico, the United States and the European Union.

Vikram Solar joins hands with Dubai’s Unidaan to supply solar products

 Kolkata-based Vikram Solar has entered into a distributorship agreement with Dubai-based Unidaan FZ LLC to supply solar products and services in the Middle East and North Africa or MENA region.

Target set for producing 1,000 MW of solar power

 Minister for Energy D.K. Shivakumar on Tuesday said that the government had set a target of producing 1,000 MW of solar power. Tenders had been invited to set up solar plants with total capacity of 500 MW.

Replying to C.H. Vijayashankar and Kota Srinivas Poojari (both of the BJP) in the Legislative Council, the Minister said the government was committed to promoting solar energy in a big way, thanks to the Solar Policy–2014 announced recently. Big brands flouting e-waste norms in Delhi , finds study

 Leading multi-national electronic and electrical equipment manufacturing companies are among the worst offenders when it comes to generation and disposal of electronic waste (e-waste) in the country, a latest study by Toxics Link has revealed. Kinetic announces a joint venture to enter the solar energy market

 The Kinetic Group has set up a new company, Kinetic Ikaros Solar, to tap into the rapidly growing solar energy market. This will be a joint venture with Ikaros, a Belgian photovoltaic company which set up operations in India last year. Mega solar project in Purulia, West Bengal

 The state government has placed a proposal to the Centre for setting up a 250MW solar power project near the Purulia Pumping Storage Project (PPSP) at Baghmundi for an estimated cost of Rs 1,700 crore.

This will be the world's biggest solar power project if the state government can sort out the issues of land availability and funds and gets the nod from the ministry of new and renewable energy.

Suzlon Regains Top Position in India Wind-Turbine Market

Suzlon Energy Ltd. (SUEL) regained its position as India’s top wind-turbine supplier from Wind World (India) Ltd. as agreements to reschedule its debt allowed it to complete orders in a resurgent market.

The Pune-based company installed 403 megawatts of turbines out of an industry total of 2,055 megawatts in the year ended March 31, according to data compiled by the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers’ Association and obtained by Bloomberg News. MCC to pay the penalty for water pollution

 The Karnataka State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has upheld an order directing the City Corporation and the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board to pay damages of Rs. 5,000 to each of 35 families here for their failure to prevent pollution of their well waters.

Power Grid okays over Rs 5.5k crore investments in 4 years

 Central transmission utility Power Grid CorporationBSE 0.99 % today approved investments of Rs 5,500 crore for upgrading networks in about 4 years. 

"Board of Directors of the Company approved strengthening the transmission corridor for independent power producers in Chhattisgarh at an estimated cost of Rs 5,151.37 crore," Power Grid Corporation informed the stock exchanges.

The commissioning schedule of the transmission project is 45 months from the date of investment approval, it said.

 India is about to launch the largest bidding of solar power projects worth 1,500 MW under its flagship Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM). In what the government officials claim is the first success story of converging the three energy ministries vis-a-vis coal, power and renewable energy, solar power would be bundled with conventional power at such a huge scale in one go.

K.R. Market to be illuminated from its own waste

 One of the oldest markets in the city, K. R. Market, will now be lit up through electricity generated from waste generated within the market.

About 100 bulbs in the market premises will be powered by the electricity generated from the bio-methanation plant, which was inaugurated on Monday.

Mayor B.S. Sathyanarayana said that the plant, which converts bio-degradable waste into energy, would process five tonnes of wet waste per day to generate electricity that could light up 100 bulbs in the market premises. It would also require 5000 litres of water per day.
