Kumar for More Waste Processing Units

 Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers H N Ananth Kumar on Monday said the Central government is planning to set up waste-to-compost units in 500 cities across the country, including Bangalore.

Speaking about the city’s garbage crisis after inaugurating a biomethanisation plant at K R Market, he said, “The crisis has been there for 10 years. We need more waste processing units.”

Alstom approves General Electric's $17 billion offer to buy its power business

 French power equipment maker AlstomBSE 1.34 % has approved $17 billion offer made by General Electric to acquire its global power business after deliberating on two more such proposals made by Siemens and Mitsubishi. 

The Board of Directors of Alstom received, on June 20, an update to the offer from General Electric (GE) to acquire the power and grid businesses of Alstom. It also received a revised proposal from Siemens and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries

Coal crunch hits power generation in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana

 Supply of coal to the Vijayawada Thermal Power Station (VTPS) and Rayalaseema Thermal Power Plant (RTPP) has decreased from the Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), which, coupled with a manpower crisis in MCL and Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), has led to severe shortage in power plants, bringing down production.

While generation in RTPP was affected on Monday, all units of VTPS were running, though it is surviving on a single day’s stock against a normal coal stock of 10 to 15 days.

No Means to Tap into Fruit Waste

 A rise in the mercury level not only ensures brisk business at the umpteen fruit juice outlets in the city, but also a two-fold  increase in the generation of fruit waste. Green nod for GAIL’s power plant in MP

 After giving green nods to some long pending defence projects, the government on Friday gave environment clearance to public sector undertaking GAIL for setting up a 380 mw gas-based power plant in Guna district of Madhya Pradesh. 

The project will be located within GAIL's existing LPG manufacturing facility-cum-compressor station at Vijaypur, one km west of the Agra-Mumbai highway.

Metro stations to be rated on green building standards

 Stations of Delhi Metro's upcoming Phase III, along with other stations across the country, will be rated to judge their compatibility with green building norms, said Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Friday. 

"This will help the metro systems design their stations as eco-friendly structures and utilise natural resources such as sunlight more effectively," said the Delhi Metro spokesman, Anuj Dayal. Novel radio enables low-power WiFi over 900MHz

 A team of researchers at Imec is presently working on a number of radios for everything from wireless charging to millimetre-wave radar targeted for the Internet of Things. The emerging 802.11ah specification for running low-power WiFi over 900MHz at distances up to a kilometre is one of the most promising new radios.

UoP gets Rs 3-crore aid to set up solar lab

 The University of Pune's School of Energy Studies has got a central grant of Rs 3 crore to set up a new research, development and testing laboratory for concentrated solar energy. The lab, once operational, will be among two labs of its kind in the country. The Solar Energy Centre in Gurgaon, Haryana, is already functional.

EV consortium pushes for energy-efficient design

 The Technical University of Munich, together with a consortium of carmakers and technology companies, has unveiled a prototype of an electric car that underscores some general design trends for electrical vehicles. According to them, the design goal of Visio.M project is two-fold: The research consortium wants to devise an electric vehicle that offers a maximum of energy efficiency and at the same time features a sporty driving behaviour.

UN enlists legal help to crack down on environmental crime

 The United Nations will seek ways to toughen environmental laws this week to crack down on everything from illegal trade in wildlife to mercury poisoning and hazardous waste.

The U.N. Environment Assembly (UNEA), a new forum of all nations including environment ministers, business leaders and civil society, will meet in Nairobi from June 23-27 to work on ways to promote greener economic growth.

Gujarat expert to lead water management panel in capital

 The adviser to the Gujarat government on water issues, Babubhai Navalawala will now head an advisory group that will "guide the Delhi government on issues related to water management".

Agra bans plastic bags to curb pollution

 With an aim to curb the rising pollution in Yamuna, the Agra district administration has decided to strictly implement the ban on use of polythene in the city. For the same cause, the municipal authorities have been asked to place barricades at Yamuna ghats to resist locals for throwing garbage and polythene into the river. 

In December 2012, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court ordered the state government to impose a ban on plastic bags across the state.

Asian Development Bank injects Rs 310 crore into Welspun's clean energy firm

 Heating up the investment sentiment in the clean energy space, Asian Development Bank has made its largest ever equity investment in the sector by pumping Rs 310 crore ($50 million) in Welspun Renewables Energy (WREL). 

This investment amount translates into ADB holding a stake of 13.3 per cent in WREL, the 100 per cent subsidiary of Welspun Energy, said the FIPB (Foreign Investment Promotion Board) document approving the proposed foreign investment in the company.

Solving the world's plastic problem

Plastic is becoming a major problem worldwide: In 2012, the United States alone produced roughly 32 million tons of plastic waste, while only recycling about 9 percent of its plastic, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

This is because of the growing use of “nonrecycled” plastics, primarily made of polystyrene and polypropylene. Seeing little return value, recyclers toss these plastics into landfills, where they pile up and never decompose. As a result, landfill space is becoming a concern.

Sunny Delhi not cut out to be solar city

The world may be going solar but the capital isn't designed to harness the sun's energy optimally. That's the crux of an environment department report on the lessons Delhi can learn from Gujarat's solar power projects.

 Intellecap Impact Investment Network (I3N) and Infuse Ventures have invested $500,000, or Rs 3 crore, in Coimbatore-based solar-agriculture startup Surya Power Magic. 

I3N, which is an angel network investing in social enterprises, saw members including solar panel manufacturer Waaree Group and family office Kshatriya Ventures participate in the deal. Coca-Cola's Varanasi Plant Shut After Pollution Board's Order

 Beverages giant Coca-Cola's plant at Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh has been shut after the state's pollution control board withdrew permission to operate over alleged violation of environmental norms.

"In an unprecedented move, Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) withdrew the consent to operate to the Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages plant at Mehandiganj, Varanasi," the company said.

The single-line plant produces soft drinks only in glass bottles and belongs to Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt Ltd, the bottling operations unit of Coca-Cola.

ReNew Power steps into solar

 Goldman Sachs-backed ReNew Power Ventures, which has all along been in the wind sector, has now taken its first step in the solar energy industry.

ReNew Power recently signed a power purchase agreement with the Government of Madhya Pradesh to sell solar power from a 50-MW plant the company would set up in the state.

Solar panel industries in AP and Telangana lies un used

 While both the new state governments are stressing on renewable sources of energy to become energy sufficient, the solar panel industry in the erstwhile state has almost become non-existent.
