Orissa gets its first solar power plant

 In a humble yet significant beginning for solar power generation in Orissa, the first solar power plant has been commissioned in the state.

 

Hyderabad-based Raajratna Energy Holdings Private Limited (REHPL), a company engaged in the development of renewable energy projects has announced the commissioning of its 1 MW solar power plant at Sadeipali in western Orissa's Bolangir district on last Monday.

Suzlon Eyes Europe's Wind Power Boom

13 July 2011 – The renewable energy sector has continued to perform well despite the global economic slowdown, cuts in incentives, and low natural-gas prices, according to a United Nations-backed report unveiled today, which shows that the sector supplied an estimated 16 per cent of global energy last year.

New technology improves quality of treated sewage

Carbon credits for Reliance Power coal plant stoke criticism

Environmentalists criticised the United Nations on Tuesday after it ruled that a large Indian coal-fired power project is eligible to earn carbon credits worth $165 mn at current prices.

Several green organisations said the U.N. rules, or methodology, applied to the 4,000 MW supercritical plant owned by Reliance Power were flawed and that the project was viable without the sweeteners of tradeable carbon credits called certified emissions reductions (CERs).

Climate impact threatens biodiesel future in EU

Europe's $13 billion biodiesel industry could be undermined by EU plans to tackle the unwanted side effects of biofuel production, after studies showed few climate benefits, four papers obtained by Reuters show.

The EU has been arguing for two years over the extent of indirect damage to the environment caused by setting a target of increasing biofuel use to 10 percent of all road fuels by 2020, and it is coming close to deciding how to act.

Plans for efficient services in slow lane

The city's comprehensive mobility plan insists that public transport trips should be increased from the present 18 % to 80 %. However, the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) is short of funds and simply does not have adequate buses to increase the number of trips.

Chennai-based Tecpro Systems Ltd has decided to buy water treatment company Ambika Projects (India) Pvt Ltd for Rs 10.3 crore.

Ambika Projects is an engineering procurement & construction (EPC) company catering to and waste water treatment, and is headquartered in Chennai. It counts JSW , Vedanta, Essar and Tata as its top clients.

India’s Karnataka State Seeks 350 Megawatts of Solar Capacity

India’s Karnataka state announced its solar power policy outlining terms for 350 megawatts of capacity that it’s targeting to build by 2016.

Under the program, Karnataka on India’s southwest coast plans to award permits to companies to build 200 megawatts of projects through bidding and the remaining 150 megawatts by application, according to a copy of the policy posted on the Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Ltd. website.

India’s $3 Billion Wind Market to Slump as Tax Break May End

Ending a federal tax break for wind farms in India, the largest market for turbines after China and the U.S., would cause a $540 million drop in demand just as suppliers including General Electric Co. (GE) expand local capacity.

Wind park installations may fall 15 percent in the financial year starting April 2012 from the 2,600 megawatts projected for this year should the benefit be discontinued, said Ashish Sethia, lead analyst with Bloomberg New Energy Finance in New Delhi.

Though most employers aren't adding jobs at a quick pace, positions tied to sustainability and renewable energy might be a bright spot.

Global warming: Cities, too, are carbon 'sinks'

Scientists on Tuesday offered a slender piece of good news about global warming , reporting that cities can be of surprising help in soaking up carbon dioxide (CO2), the principal greenhouse gas .

Around four percent of the world's land surface is defined as urbanised, a figure expected to surge as the planet's human population rises from seven billion this year to as much as 9.5 billion by mid-century.

Tata BP Solar bags three solar projects in Gujarat

NEW DELHI: Tata BP Solar India Ltd , a joint venture of Tata Power and BP Solar, has three solar power projects totalling more than 30 megawatts in the state of Gujarat. It these projects under the first phase of the state solar power policy of the Gujarat government.

RPower to earn R1.1k cr in carbon credits

Reliance Power has become the largest supplier of certified emission reductions (CERs) in the Indian power generation sector, with its 3,960-mw Krishnapatnam ultra mega power project (UMPP) getting registered with the United Nations Framework on Climate Change (UNFCC) under the clean development mechanism.

The company’s similarly-sized Sasan UMPP in Chhattisgarh is already registered with the UN agency for carbon credits. “Reliance Power has become the largest supplier of CERs among the Indian power generation companies with 3.48 million CERs,” the company said in a statement.

India Solar Power Projects to Submit Funding Proof by July 24

Companies awarded permits in India’s first national auction of rights to build solar power plants have until July 24 to submit documentation to prove they’ve arranged funding, an official said.

The companies must show they secured funding on or before July 9, said Anil Kumar Agrawal, chief executive officer of NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd., or NVVN, the state-run power trader that’s overseeing the solar program.

“Those deadlines are sacrosanct,” Agrawal said by telephone from New Delhi. “There will not be any extension.”

Orient Green Power to Raise Capacity 38% on Wind-Energy Demand

Orient Green Power Co., the first renewable-energy company to list in India, plans to increase capacity by 38 percent as demand for cleaner electricity grows.

Operating capacity for wind-power and biomass projects will rise to 342 megawatts in the financial year through March 2012, the Chennai-based company said today in an e-mailed statement. That compares with 248.5 megawatts now, it said.
