ADB Power Loans to Lift Growth, Jobs in India's Madhya Pradesh State

The ADB Board of Directors approved the multitranche financing facility which will support the second phase of the state’s ongoing $1.1 billion energy efficiency investment program to improve power distribution infrastructure in 32 districts. Under the first tranche, ADB will provide $200 million.

Carbon credits: UN panel for taking thermal plants off list

In a move that can adversely hit India's low carbon approach a United Nations panel wants energy efficient thermal power plants not to be considered under global carbon offsetting scheme, the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) as claims on emission reduction were inflated. In a report submitted to CDM Executive Board, a body that decides on the nature of the products that can be allowed, the panel sought suspension of carbon trading for super critical thermal plants as emission reductions claimed have been overstated by 25 to 50%.

Investment in green energy soared to $211 billion in 2010

The UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) Division of Technology, Industry and Economics reports that investment in green energies was up 32% in 2010, compared to the previous year and has now risen 540% since 2004. The latest increase was largely due to new wind farms in China and a rapid uptake of residential solar panels in Europe.

Notably, it was developing countries that were seen to be making up the vanguard, forging ahead with green energy investment and development. China, in particular, invested $48.9 billion, an increase of 28% on 2009.

Reckitt Benckiser releases second annual sustainibility report

Reckitt Benckiser, the global consumer products giant, has published its second annual sustainability report, detailing the sustainability improvements achieved in the last year. The report and associated data has been independently assured by PricehousewaterCoopers (PwC).

Environmental sustainability improvements include an 11% reduction per unit dose in the carbon impact across its products’ lifecycle. Climate changes may affect tea production in Assam

Climatic changes in the Brahmaputra basin in near future may affect tea production in Assam, experts feel.

A “preliminary study” carried out by IIT-Guwahati on impact of climate change on water resources of Brahmaputra basin revealed that there will be significant changes in rainfall pattern and temperature of this basin.

Peddar Rd flyover to have noise, pollution barriers

 

To address environment concerns regarding the construction of the Peddar Road flyover, the Maharshrastra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) said it will use state-of-the-art technology to combat air and noise pollution. Residents have time and again protested against the flyover which they say would cause inconvenience and pollution in the area.

Orisa state shuts down six sponge iron plants

Cracking the whip on errant sponge iron plants in the state, the Orissa State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) has shut six such units for their failure to undertake pollution mitigation measures.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Kharagpur which had carried out a detailed study on the functioning of 104 out of 109 sponge iron plants in the state had recommended these plants to upgrade bag filter and install pneumatic dust handling system to control pollution.

Thermax unveils new solar cooling system

 

Thermax has designed and commissioned a first-of-a-kind solar airconditioning system at the Solar Energy Centre in Gurgaon, Haryana. The 100-kw technology demonstration project was inaugurated by Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Dr Farooq Abdullah in the presence of Union Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde recently.

 

The project was partly funded by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

SunBorne selects Titan Tracker heliostat design for 1MW pilot solar power tower system in India

SunBorne Energy is developing a one MW solar power tower system. This R&D project is jointly funded by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India, and SunBorne Energy.

Demand for renewable units picks up

As the first quarter of the current fiscal draws to an end, trading in renewable energy certificates (REC) has started gaining momentum. The latest REC trading not only saw an increase in volumes, but also rise in buyers' interest.

The June 29 trade saw a volume increase of 14 per cent over the previous one. A total of 15,902 RECs were traded and the price discovered was Rs 1,505 for each certificate, which was marginally higher than the previous three months.

MMC's solid waste processing facility to begin operation by May 2012

After decades of waiting, commercial airlines have been given the go-ahead to use fuel made from algae, wood chips, and other plants with obscure names. 'Level of air pollution in cities may impair brain'

Waiting at a traffic signal behind a vehicle spewing pollutants could hurt your ability to learn. Exposure to particulate matter (PM) pollution over prolonged periods at levels typical of Delhi and other Indian and Chinese cities could impair cognition, cause depression and chronically damage key parts of the brain, scientists have found.

Climatic conditions unsuitable for the existing biodiversity may metamorphose 21% of Maharashtra's forest vegetation by 2030, a recent study by the Bangalore-based Indian Institute of Science said.

Agartala, July 5 (IANS) Improved connectivity and a regional energy grid can ensure faster economic development of the northeast, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar said Tuesday.

Nothing will detract from NSG's clean waiver to India: France

Days after India hinted that it may not buy nuclear reactors from countries which did not sell it enrichment and reprocessing (ENR) technology, France Tuesday forcefully backed the Nuclear Suppliers Group's 2008 clean waiver for New Delhi, saying "nothing in the existing and future guidelines" shall detract from it.

Godawari Gets Bank Funding for Solar-Thermal Plant in India

Godawari Power & Ispat Ltd., one of the seven companies that won licenses to build India’s first solar-thermal plants, has arranged funding for its project from the Bank of Baroda. (BOB)

The Raipur, Chhattisgarh-based developer won project financing for its planned 50-megawatt solar plant in Rajasthan state, Managing Director B.L. Agrawal said today by telephone. He declined to give details.

TATA Steel gets to August 2 the time to show that dioxin emissions back to the standards of the province. If this is not the case, given the steel company after each detected violation a fine of EUR 150,000.
