Zamorano University Students Teach Energy Efficiency In India

Four students from leading Latin American University, Zamorano University, are putting their skills into action in India. The students have successfully implemented an energy efficiency campaign in Bihar in India’s southeast teaching students about electricity preservation. More than 5000 high school and college students across 30 schools have participated in their pioneering program.

Activists question privatization in Delhi as Pune shows the way

 New Delhi: As urbanization gathers pace in India, cities are generating increasing amounts of garbage, posing a challenge to municipal authorities for its efficient disposal and recycling.

This is nowhere more evident than in the national capital, which has the dubious distinction of being the largest producer of municipal solid waste in the country, generating 8,000 tonnes of it daily.

As much as 15-20% of the garbage can be recycled, according to a study by Chintan, a non-profit organization working with ragpickers in the city.

CERC seeks fuel efficiency labels for four wheelers - Economic Times

The Consumer Education and Research Centre (CERC) called upon the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) to implement the fuel efficiency Standards and labelling for four-wheelers in India. The CERC sent a representation to this effect to BEE director general Ajay Mathur.

It may be mentioned here that BEE has already introduced star labelling, indicating the power consumption of electrical equipments, air-conditioners, refrigerators, distribution transformers, ceiling fans, pumps/motors and geysers. Karnataka state outlines plans for 350MW of solar projects under new energy policy

The Indian state of Karnataka has published its updated solar policy, which includes a target for 350MW of solar projects by 2016. The Government will allocate 40MW worth of projects for direct sale to the different distribution companies in the state, commonly known as ESCOMS, up to the amount of 200MW. A total of 50MW of bundled solar thermal power will be allotted to state-owned utilities for development. The split between photovoltaic and concentrated solar power (CSP) has not yet been defined.

CERC to review tariff norms for biomass plants

The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) plans to review tariff determination norms for biomass power projects to allow developers pass the increase in fuel costs to users.

The regulator has taken the decision to review tariff guidelines for biomass power plants on a request from the ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE), sources said. The ministry has swung into action because many biomass plants closed down in states like Punjab, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh due to high fuel costs.

Govt may introduce CNG in city: Modi

The state capital, which is among the 16 most polluted cities of the country, is now the second city in eastern India, next only to Kolkata, with a continuous (online) ambient air quality monitoring (CAAQM) station. next to Kolkata.

Over 2000 glaciers retreating in country

For better planning and management of water resources, the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) and department of space conducted satellite-based monitoring of the glaciers across the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra river basins. The extensive study of snow and glaciers of Himalayas has been released by MoEF.

India has 16,672 glaciers covering an area of 40,563 sqkm. Over 2,700 glaciers were monitored. Of 2,767 glaciers, 2184 are retreating, 435 are advancing and 148 glaciers show no change.

India among top 5 renewable energy capacity countries: Farooq Abdullah

 India has an installed renewable energy base of about 20 GW, which is around 11 per cent of the country's total power capacity and accounts for 4 per cent of the electricity mix, Minister of New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah has said at a forum in Abu Dhabi.

Renewable certificate price revision may hurt fund flows

 
The proposed downward price revision for renewable energy certificates (REC), if accepted, will jeopardise investment flow in green projects.

The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission has suggested a six to 20 per cent price cut for RECs effective April 2012 for three years, intending to make trading attractive.

Climate minister welcomes Australian carbon tax

Climate Change Minister Nick Smith is welcoming the Australian government's announcement of a carbon emissions tax set initially at $A23 per tonne.

Dr Smith says New Zealand officials have been working closely with their Australian counterparts and any changes to New Zealand's Emissions Trading Scheme will take account of the Australian announcement.

Programme to utilise solid waste first in India: min

The much awaited Solid Waste Management programme of the Punjab government would commence from August 31, a minister said here today.
"This multipurpose project would be first of its kind in India where all towns and cities would be covered under MSW (Municipal Solid Waste) management in scientific manner," Local Bodies and Industries Minister Tikshan Sud said.

1mw scale solar power plant installed and commissioned

The Joint Venture of Tata Power and BP Solar India limited is the first company to have installed and commissioned one megawatt scale solar power plant under the National Solar mission.

 

 
This landmark project is owned and developed by M/s B & G Solar Private Limited at Komal West Village, Mayiladuthurai in Tami Nadu.

The Indian government is going ahead with the proposed 1,500-MW Tipaimukh hydel power project in Manipur despite objections from NGOs in India and opposition parties in neighbouring Bangladesh, says an official.

Australia plans to impose carbon tax on worst polluters

The Australian government has unveiled plans to impose a tax on carbon emissions for the worst polluters.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard said carbon dioxide emissions would be taxed at A$23 ($25; £15) per tonne from 2012.

The country's biggest economic reform in a generation will cover some 500 companies. In 2015, a market-based trading scheme will be introduced.

Households are expected to see consumer prices rise by nearly 1%, and the move has been criticised by the opposition.

Carbon dioxide content threatening Ajanta Caves: ASI

The Ajanta Caves, a world heritage site located 5km northeast of Aurangabad, are under threat because of high carbon dioxide (CO2) content resulting from increasing human interference, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has said. The ASI has conducted a five-year climate monitoring study inside the caves.

The source of CO2 in the caves is exhalation by visitors. Ajanta Caves attract 6,000-7,000 tourists a day during the peak season of October to January and about 4,000 visitors a day during the rest of the year.

 The Orissa State Pollution Control Board has asked six sponge iron units to shut down for not adhering to environment safety measures as earlier directed the body, state environment minister Debi Prasad Mishra said on Thursday.

IFC to invest $2.7 m in Jain Irrigation arm

IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, is helping Jain Irrigation Systems in India to set up Sustainable Agro-Commercial Finance Limited, a non-banking finance company that will provide loans to small-scale farmers to help them install micro-irrigation systems and improve productivity.

The project is expected to benefit more than six lakh farmers with limited access to credit, in the next five years, said IFC here on Thursday.

Centre to help revive 9 Mahagenco units

In a major boost for Mahagenco, central government with help of German government, has decided to fund life extension of nine 210 MW units.
