Sabarmati may lose 70% water in 40 years, says IIM-A studyThe Sabarmati riverfront project will have to depend on Narmada river to survive because the river may not have much water left in less than 40 years, says a study by professors at Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad ( IIM-A). Flying high with non-food biofuelA couple of days earlier, KLM Royal Dutch became the first airline in the world to operate a commercial flight, carrying 171 passengers, on bio-kerosene produced from used cooking fuel oil. NMC finally bans POP idolsFinally, the civic body has banned idols made of plaster of paris (PoP). No more mini-hydel plants near state projects: MinisterEnergy minister Shobha Karandlaje has made it clear that mini-hydel projects won't be allowed to function near any state power corporation project. "Many such projects have come up because of old policies of the state and central governments," she said on Thursday. Mini-hydel projects use the state's resources and sell the same power at exorbitant rates. She told KPCL officials to prepare an assessment report on mini-hydel plants in the state and also asked them to see if it's possible for the corporation to acquire these projects.

Container-free wards scheme too expensive for PCMCThe PCMC's plan to have wards without garbage containers has proved too costly and the civic body has decided to do away with the scheme. "The scheme was implemented in five wards," said R B Chavan, medical officer. "As per the scheme, no garbage containers is kept in the wards. One vehicle goes around collecting garbage which is then dumped at the Moshi garbage depot. Vehicles have to travel 10 to 20 km to dump the garbage and this is proving too costly, so we want to stop this scheme." Top paint brands in India, Nepal and Bangladesh continue to flout lead norms: StudyA study of 27 paints from India, Bangladesh and Nepal has shown dangerously high levels of lead, according to a report by Toxics Link, the NGO specializing in pollution abatement. The tests were conducted on all the major paint brands in India (and the other two countries). "Overall 63% of the paint samples studied were exceeding the US’s 90ppm limit by 422 times, 44% of samples exceeded the much relaxed Indian Standard limit of 1000ppm by over 54 times," the NGO, headed by Ravi Agarwal, said. Rs 181 cr released for eastern Green Revolution upto June 1 this FYThe Centre has released Rs. 181.35 upto June 1 this financial year to seven eastern states as part of its Green Revolution extension plan. Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Orissa, Eastern UP and West Bengal are covered under the scheme.
