The Uttarakhand government is taking steps to endorse eco-tourism by building small bamboo huts and providing rich flora at botanical parks for tourists' visual treat.

The state's forest department has developed a cactus garden and a bamboo hut at the Himalayan Botanical Garden on Kaladhungi Road in Nainital.

Eco tourism is being promoted in Uttarakhand, as a part of the 'Green India' mission, which is a ten-year plan and is divided into six to seven phases.

Solar light project launched for remote Varanasi villages

 Some Varanasi villages may soon shine under the bright solar lights.

An ambitious project 'Jyotirgamaya' launched by the Grand Lodge of India. It has established a solar power plant at Amrit Sagar Eco centre of Aghor Foundation in Ramnagar area.

The power plant was inaugurated on Thursday last. The system consists of PV solar modules, charger/controller, and storage batteries. The solar plant was established at the cost of Rs. 30 lakh.

Gush of funds greets wind projects

A gush of investment activity has been breezing across India’s wind energy economy in recent months as private equity funds and asset financing companies seek to exploit opportunities in the sector coming through a mix of tax breaks, policy incentives and ecological benefits, experts said. In vestments worth $586 million (Rs 2,637 crore) have already flowed into wind farms in India during January to March this year.

Organic Waste Lights Up Pune's Streetlamps

As much as 40 percent of domestic garbage is processed every day in 12 biogas plants in the city.

Statistics reveal the city produces 1,200-1,400 metric tonnes of waste, out of which only 200-250 tonnes is organic waste. Out of that, 50 metric tonnes of organic waste is processed to generate electricity.

According to officials, the waste is collected from different sources for further treatment.

"The plant uses green waste from households, vegetable and markets, which is called wet waste. We collect it here for treatment," said Sanjay Nandre, a project developer.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is to press India during a visit this week to sign up to binding carbon-dioxide emissions targets, she said Saturday in her weekly video message. The national conference on green buildings, organised by PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) on Friday focussed on efforts to conserve the environment, preserve natural resources and save energy in all structures.

Sloppy recycling seen posing threat to green tech

The green technology industry was warned on Thursday that its growth is threatened by a failure to recycle metals and especially rare earth elements.

A U.N.-backed report warned that less than one third of metals globally have a recycling rate of more than 50 percent.

"Many metal recycling rates are discouragingly low, and a recycling society appears no more than a distant hope," said the recycling report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). "This is especially true for many specialty metals, which are crucial ingredients for key emerging technologies."

Low metal recycling threatens green economy: UN report

Too much metal is being thrown away when it could be recycled, wasting an opportunity to save energy and risking shortages in materials used for new green technologies, a UN report warned Thursday.

In a landmark study, the first to outline the extent to which metals are collected, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) found that less than one third of about 60 metals studied are recycled to any significant degree.

India to add 9th mission to climate change action plan

 India is set to expand its domestic action plan to limit the growth of greenhouse gases by adding clean carbon initiatives to its eight-pronged response to tackle climate change.

"We will soon add a ninth mission -- clean coal or clean carbon initiatives -- to our National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) that was launched in 2008," Principal Scientific Adviser R Chidambaram said here.

The Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA) is organising a two-day national conference on renewable energy at Udhagamandalam in The Nilgiris district on Saturday and Sunday (May 28 and 29) in association with the Tamil Nadu Tea Exporters' Association.

India’s Renewable Credits Trade Sees Volume Surge in May Session

Trading volumes in India’s new market for renewable-energy credits surged more than 70-fold in its fourth session.

Buyers today purchased 18,502 renewable energy certificates, or RECs, at the floor price of 1,500 rupees ($33), according to data from REConnect Energy Solutions Pvt., an Indore-based trader of the credits, sent to Bloomberg News. In the previous session last month, only 260 were sold.
